Yesterday, while traveling through very strong winds in Ohio, we heard a thumping noise on the roof. I pulled off as quickly as possible and hopped up on the roof. Thought it might be my antenna, again, but saw the front cover of my a/c hanging off by one screw. I had checked the covers, before our trip, and had even replaced a missing front screw, which came loose. I had a little corner piece broken off, but was able to rescrew the cover, using self tapping screws, which I luckily had.
From what I hear, these are almost impossible to replace.
I added an extra screw in the front of both units, and we seem to have it under control.
I will always check these areas, before any trip, and recommend you do the same. These things get pretty brittle after 20 years!!
Have you added SS fender washers to spread the load?
As far as replacements, these are better than OE quality: Air Conditioner Shrouds | AC Shrouds | RV Air Conditioner Covers (http://www.icondirect.com/rv-exterior-parts/air-conditioner-shrouds)
I've used these shrouds now from Camping World for three years. So far the quality seems very good, still white and flexible for my Dometic Penguin AC units.

A friend of mine patched one of the covers on my old Foretravel with fiberglass.
