Title: MOT ?
Post by: Steve and Barb on June 04, 2020, 03:43:00 pm
How is MOT service? Thinking of getting a joystick installed for the retarder on my transmission. I have a 1997 U-320. Any comments?

They are probably as good as anyone if you can't do it yourself. You will love it.

Their service is great. We just left there. Check with them, they may sent you to Stewart Stevenson since it's a transmission issue. Don't know for sure. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the heads up, checked the reviews and they all said great things. Got a date set in August.

Like craneman said, it's plug and play, just buy it, and put it in yourself.

Not too hard to install yourself if your retarder currently working. I installed mine after reading the posts here on forum. Stewart Stephenson in Longview knows these coaches well and can fix any related transmission issues. Took mine to them because retarder wasn't working. I love the joystick controller, should have been standard on every coach. One of the best upgrades if not installed.

Not everyone has the tools or is willing, able or comfortable doing some of this work themselves.  MOT is a good choice. Ask if you can watch while they do it so you know how it was done.  A good learning experience.

Learning how things work on your coach is a good plan.  Even if you don't do the work yourself you will know what they are talking about. Keep asking questions, it is a good way to learn.

The best thing about MOT is that they are trustworthy. Great folks.

They have done 2 jobs for me.. Without going into details because it doesn't matter, one of the jobs failed before I got home.. Called them and they mailed a check for parts and labor with no hassle . Can't be any more reasonable than that.

They are honest and know Foretravels very well. I grade their quality of work as a strong "B."

My experience with MOT was the same as DUB's. The last time we had service done in Nac was at Nac Motor Coaches, and were well satisfied with them. I don't think you could really go wrong with FOT, MOT, or NMC.

I have also enjoyed my trips to MOT, and sitting with service writer, going over my lists, and them explaining and estimating each item.
They have been spot on for every item.  They will let you watch, and ask questions, but I try to stay out of their way.  I have also received suggestions and info on things they were not going to attend to, that I could do myself, was my choice.

There is good communications between the service writers, and the all the shop guys.  Have your hit list, and wish list, and line them out before arriving, that they may schedule the teams and the hours you need to be made happy.

Can anybody provide me with the part numbers for this project? I think I and my mechanic are going to install it.
I have a 1997 U-320, with a M-11 Celect, with the Allison 4060R transmission with the on off switch. Want to install the joystick control.

Steven,

Just use the Forum search function (top right corner of screen).  Search for the term "joystick installation".  Lots of info!

To all of you that helped me out with the retarder joystick, I am sorry I didn't reply till now but I did get it done and it was a plug and play,  30 minutes and it was completed. Love love love it!

Yes..... love ours also. Took longer to mount the joystick than it did to connect it.    Brake activated retarder is ok but the joystick is way better.  Especially in the Rocky Mountain passes.

Your absolutely right, I did have to install the relay so my brake lights would come on when the retarder activated. Thanks again.

Can anyone tell me what will it cost at today's prices to purchase the retarder joystick for my 1996 U270 with the 3060.
Is it also a plug & play installation?
Always wanted one and now I hope I can afford it.
Regards

Might try calling the FOT or MOT parts desk and check price with them.  The way things are these days with supply chain problems, chip shortages, and rising inflation, prices seem to go up every day.

If someone could explain the difference between just the retarder and having the joystick? My '95 U240 has just the retarder and it seems fine, What advantages does the joystick give you?
Thx
Joe

With a Joystick you can use just the retarder and you can put the amount of retard you
want.

The ability to use the retarder without the brake pedal for one and more selectivity is another advantage.
