Title: dash gauge lights out and horns?
Post by: dans96u295ft on June 05, 2020, 06:14:55 pm
Replacing the bulb in the air pressure gauge ( metal holder ) and had an electrical arc and now the gauge lights and horns quit. I assume this is not a separate issue. FT said replace auto breaker 25 and I did. Didn't help. Cannot find any inline fuses under dash lift up. Fudge, I'm frustrated!

Did you check the manual reset beaker in the basement that feeds the buss where the #25 breaker gets its power from? The thig with the air horns is that they feed off of breaker #26 and it is on a different buss than #25 IIRC.

If you have checked the reset breaker in the basement, try the 10 amp fuse pictured here. This is for our U300 but yours may be close. Drag a corner to get a closer view.

Take your schematics to a print shop and blow them up as large as possible and then roll them to fit in a mailing tube. You can't read the schematics in the original size or at least, I can't.

Get a 12 volt test light and see where you have and don't have power. That is the quickest way to check for power.

I have a similar problem on my 1990, my dash lights are not working, I have Checked the fuse under dash and that seems to be OK, replaced with another new just to be sure but still no dash lights, however, I connected a live feed to one terminal of fuse while in place and the dsh lights came on, so it's telling me that there is no power going to the fuse, so is it likely then that the fault is coming from the headlight switch itself, when I pull the headlamp notch out once all the side and marker lights are working, does the switch send the power to the fuse, if that is the case I need a new switch, what do you think kev

Same here. All my lights and markers still work. Dash gauge lights don't. I assume they go thru the headlight switch when you pull it out to power the gauge lights? I have power on 25 in the stairwell, in fact 17 volts when the ignition switch is on so I don't think that is the correct breaker for the gauge lights

17 VDC will quickly cook your batteries!

What charging device are you using when you got this reading???

A good multimeter. all other auto fuses were 12.4, It may have been a bad reading

Wolfe do you know how the light switch works to send battery to the gauge lights? It must go thru the headlight switch correct?

Sorry, I don't have a wiring schematic for the 1996

Ok. Looks like breaker 20 is the dash and headlight auto breaker. I have power thru 20 and 25 if key is on so I believe 20 is my breaker.
Does anyone know of any fuses in line or otherwise in the wiring for the gauge lights besides the auto reset breaker.
I'm thinking when I arced the bulb maybe I damaged the headlight switch?
It seems to me since the gauge lights come on when you pull the headlight switch either to park or full on, that's when the instrument lights come on normally
Help!

I think it's possibly the switch, although you probably have a different model than mine, being I have the same problem, my fuse box under dash, is a 5 amp fuse, the fuse was OK and what I did I connected a direct Live feed to the fuse and dash lights came on also my map reading light is connected to this also and when everything was working OK if you turned the switch anti clockwise the dimmer switch for dash lights this light would come on and dash lights would go to the lowest light setting can't remember for sure they may have even gone off, however that is still not coming on when I connect the direct feed to fuse only the dash lights, but they are quite bright on f ull, and obviously because I'm bypassing the switch it's not operating the dimmer, I'm in the process of checking it out in between doing other jobs, nearly ready to be back on road, but I tell you what il do later, is take a photo of my schematics and send them to you, I'm not very good at understanding wiring diagrams, in the UK wiring diagrams are all coloured so it makes it a lot easier
