Title: Injector timing on my 8.2ltr
Post by: kevo0000 on June 06, 2020, 08:01:26 am
Hya all, has anyone ever done injector timing on detroit 8.2ltr, would love to have a go at doing mine, maybe there are some videos out there that could help me with, I do have the workshop manual, but if I can actually see someone doing this job on a video, would be a great help, looking in my manual, I need a dial gauge to do this job, is this a specialist tool for detroit 8.2 only or, would any dial gauge be any good, thanks kev

When I first discovered there is such a thing as a 8.2 Detroit, I did see there were a couple of shops that specialized in the engine. I will take a look online for a rebuilder as they did mention some special tools were needed. Since there are several forum members with 8.2 engines, they probably will chime in on this one.

Thanks a lot for that pierce, il watch the video, but yeah if you can find out the right tool for this job would be gratefull, inlet and exhaust valve clearences are easy to set, just use a feeler gauge, but injector timing that's a different matter, but I will learn how to do it, just everything else, thanks

Also, once I've eventually set the injector timing, I want to move onto rack adjustment etc, the only reason why I want to adjust the timing or at least check it first, is because I do get a bit of grey smoke on start up, it dose stop when engine warms up, so that may be normal, but I was told if you got grey smoke that is unburnt fuel, always interested in learning to do jobs like this myself as over hear in UK, I would be very surprised to find any mechanic that has worked on this type of engine

I have always gotten white/grey smoke on startup. The colder it is, the more smoke is produced and for longer. Non-turbo engines usually produce less as they may have higher compression ratios.

I'm thinking about shops that do a lot of school bus work and it was a very popular school bus engine. Known for good fuel mileage. Good to check forums for tips as the 8.2 had head gasket problems but like the 7.3 Ford/Navistar, larger head bolts made it a much more reliable engine.

It's 4 am over here at mo, can't get back to sleep, was just thinking, I watched that video you said to watch earlier, but all I could see was a bloke starting up the 8.2 and filled his garage with carbon monoxide to the point where I couldn't see him, I was waiting for him to show how he adjusted the timing, was I looking at the wrong video, I have searched in the past on utube, hoping that someone may have done a complete video on how to adjust the injector timing but with no success, thing is with me I read the manuals over and over again and usually after many times of studying them I end up working out most jobs, but this one  I can partly understand but wouldn't want to attempt it until I'm absolutely sure in my head what to do, but if you or anyone can put me in touch with someone out there that has done this job then please let me know, thanks kev, il send the link to my engine cause I did  short video, of it before I installed it, I'm not sure if you have seen it before when I posted it, but il send it again tell me what you think in your opinion, personally I think it sounds fine, and there wasn't mutch smoke then, just seems to be more since it's all back in with the exhaust on it thanks kev

Yes, wrong video for adjusting injection timing. Must be a member here that has adjusted or had the injector timing done on their 8.2.

Diesels produce very low CO (carbon monoxide) compared to a gasoline engine and if running properly, 1 percent is about it compared to 12% in a gas car. The 8.2 startup was probably more than that with all the unburned fuel. Introduction to Diesel Exhaust: What Is Carbon Monoxide? | Holocaust Denial... (https://www.hdot.org/debunking-denial/ds1-intro-carbon-monoxide/)

But, in an enclosed space, they can still produce enough CO to kill you so not smart do drive or idle with a big exhaust leak and someone in the bedroom.

Ha ha, yeah my partner wouldn't want to go to sleep in the main bedroom anyway whilst I was driving, I would open up the bed settee for her if she wanted to sleep, when it is finally back on the road, Ive told her we're going to Holland for a few days maybe drive up into Germany, but if I'm gonna do that, il set off evening time drive through the night, traffic over here and in Holland so busy during the day, so yeah she would be OK sleeping behind me, whilst I was doing the driving, she came with me a few years ago on a trip in the lorry, just a day job and she went in the bunk fell asleep and before she new it we were back home ha ha, as for the smoke, like you said when the engine warms up, hardly any at all, I meant to post a link to my engine running before I fitted it back in the villa but couldn't work out how to share a link from utube  to the site, I've only recently just managed to work out how to upload photos from my phone

Oh and also, if you can find out who the member was that did his injector timing, would be handy especially if he had done a video, I'm not too concerned about it cause it seems to run evenly and revs up OK,

The injector timing goes a little late as the engine wears a few thou.  But the 8.2 that runs well should be left as is IMHO.  Advancing the timing  puts more load on everything, esp the head bolts/gaskets.  This engines' weak point.
If it starts and drives well. leave as is.  IMHO.

Well yeah your absolutely right, I haven't took it out on the road yet since putting other engine in it, still could be couple months, lots of other little jobs I'm doing, silly little things that can take up a lot of time, when everything is ready, the last job I'm gonna do is fit the brake calipers all round, I don't want to fit new ones on yet and not being used, but yeah, I will leave that I think,  it hardly smokes now, I added a couple of tins of injector cleaner, in with fuel, just one thing I'm not sure about Mike, the engine ticks over runs smoothly it revs up well but I do notice if I rev it up to about 1500 rpm and hold it at that speed it's fine, but if I gently slow it down just for a couple of seconds I seem to get a slight vibration and then the vibration stops and back to tick over runs fine, would you know what that could be please thanks kev
