Title: Microwave door hinges...left or right?
Post by: Woody & Sitka on June 08, 2020, 11:23:18 pm
Did you know that there is no such thing as a microwave oven with hinges on the right side???  I have never seen any product in history with this type of forced uniformity.  WTF???  This is ludicrous!!!

Where my microwave sits, the left hand hinge is completely ergonomically unuseable!!!  I looked at turning a microwave upside down and switching all the stuff...nope.

I'm ready to switch to a range/oven and replace the microwave with a light/fan or just more useful storage.

Rant-out.

I'll take your word for that, although I have never actually searched for a right-side hinged microwave.

But, why stress over this fact?  They make left-hinged models with the door hinge moved slightly "inboard".  This creates clearance necessary so the unit can be mounted flat up against a wall on the left side, and the door still opens 90 degrees.  Many Forum members have replaced the OEM microwave ovens with various newer models that work just fine.

Here is our Sharp R1874 (white is old - stainless is new).  New one fit perfectly in the existing recess with no modification required:

Some have installed Advantium micro/convection ovens.  Door hinges on the bottom.

We have one in the house and like it.

My home Bosch microwave convection oven hinges on the bottom as well. Not sure if I like it as much as the left hinged one.
