Title: Relay confusion
Post by: folivier on June 09, 2020, 05:19:00 pm
Inside in the front panel by passenger seat there are a number of Bosch relays #332 209 161.  Then in the basement behind the white cover there are 3 Bosch relays #332 204 161.  I need to buy a couple spares of each type but not finding the 332 204 161.  These operate the basement and entry door locks.  Can anyone help me to locate these or a cross reference that might work?

Funny, but I could not find relays and phone call to a friend, Mike Rash suggested I ask them for a "72 VW headlight relay".  It popped right up on the NAPA computer counter screen.  It was for my bathroom over head hall light.

I have mentioned to many, go find all your relays, by sound, while they still work and note their hidden locations.

I just learned the Aqua Hot fuel filter is also a VW part number on a 97 320.

This should be the latching relay: 111941583 Headlight Dimmer Relay,12V 5 prong:
Fits All 12 Volt VW's.
The wiring terminal designations for the VW Headlight Relay is:

56 - Power from the Headlight Switch
56a - Power to the High Beam Terminal on the Fuse Box
56b or "F" - Power to the Low Beam Terminal on the Fuse Box
30 - Power from 56 terminal
S - Momentary Ground from Turn Signal Switch

The relay MUST HAVE POWER to the #30 terminal to operate. If your wiring does not have a power wire to the #30 terminal a "jumper" wire can be run from the #56 terminal to the #30 terminal.

Do a search as there are other Asian relays that do the job of the Bosch. Half the price too.

This is also the latching relay for the water pump on earlier Foretravels inclucing our 1993 U300.

He is not looking for a latching relay but a Bosch type with a specific number. I would have to look at it to see what the difference is.

Talked with Brad at FT and he's sending me a couple relays.  He said he thinks they are typical relays.
I had replaced one for the entry door recently with a typical relay and it appears to have failed.  The entry door and 1 basement door will unlock but not lock with the key fob, all of the other basement doors work properly.  It did the same thing a few weeks ago and replacing a relay fixed it.  But doing the same again.  I'll post again when I get the relays from Brad.
