Title: Need Help...... Allison Keypad, dark.........
Post by: FourTravelers on June 20, 2020, 01:03:04 pm
Never a good time, but we need to be on the road now. Fearing the worst....

Our Allison Keypad is dark, wont light up when ignition is turned on,
My wiring diagram doesn't show a fuse for the Keypad. Does anyone have any suggestions?
We are supposed to be out of this campsite at noon and on our way home to FL.
Thanks,
Justin

Access the back of the Allison keypad, disconnect and reconnect the multi-pin jack.  Most have a zip ty installed to prevent inadvertent disconnect.

Neal

Not the keypad. On the ECU down by the drivers feet will be 2 large connectors on the side. Reseat them and be on your way.

At least on the 1993 U240 with same transmission, there are TWO fuses under the flip up dash for the Allison.  One 5 amp and one 15 amp and labeled.

If fuses are OK, and the gang plugs on the Allison ECU and gang plug on the shift pad are clean and tight, next call is to John: Transmission Instruments (http://www.transmissioninstruments.com/)

This is what he does for a living and has for many years--diagnose and repair Allison shift pads and Allison ECU's.

Try taking the  ECU out of the unit and either hit it with a hair dryer or put it out in the sun plug it back in and mine works for at least one day

Is the salesman switch off?

Salesman switch is for the house battery bank.

Allison's two fuses are off the chassis bank.

Yes, this ASSUMES no one has "rewired" it.

Just got back to the coach, had to make arrangements for the campsite tonight, a place to be towed to tomorrow and a RV park that will accept a disabled motorhome.
Thanks for the replies, I've tried unplugging and resetting the Control module with the two oval plugs, tried the hair dryer also. I have not found the dash fuses as of yet but still looking.
I have found two 10 amp fuses behind the passenger kick panel, ATEC ECM and  ENG ECM, both test good (12.8 V)

Thanks for the replies, I spoke with John K. at Transmission Instruments, he suggest sending him the ECM and Keypad, hoping to get it going one more time to get home. Having problems with a tow service and a place to go to while waiting on a repair.

Towing is a last resort.

Brett,
I don't see any fuses under the flip up dash, maybe the 93 and 95 are different?
Still looking but nothing yet.
Any relays involved in powering the Allison ECM ?
Also is the the ATEC referred to on the fuse panel drawing #A-4845 the Allison controller?

Justin,

It seems like the beaker for the ATEC is in the basement hid behind the fiberglass breaker cover on the '95 GV. It should get it's feed off one of the 90 amp round breakers that is mounted on that panel. It should be like a 30 amp beaker.  Take a meter or even a test light and check to see if you have voltage there.

Update........... ;D  ;D  ;D  ;D  ;D  ;D

Thank you all for the replies, Thanks a bunch Mike for the suggestion of looking in the bay behind the cover. There were no tripped breakers and all checked OK behind there EXCEPT FOR............ a broken 3/8" terminal lug with a #10 white wire crimped to it. I said a prayer and hoped it was the ground wire to the ATEC because all of the fuses that we checked were OK.

Replaced the crimped lug on the white wire  and turned on the ignition.        IT WORKS!!!!!!!! Thank you LORD and the Forum.  ^.^d  ^.^d  ;D  ;D  ;D  ;D

Gotta regroup and make plans to get on the road early in the morning.

THANK YOU MIKE for the tip to check the 12v breakers in the bay. I assumed incorrectly that with power to the ATEC it was for sure defective.
LESSON LEARNED............ you also need a ground connection.
This could have been a disaster if I had sent it off to be repaired, flew my wife and son home, had the coach towed to another campground, waited a week to get the ATEC back, another week of campground fees, car rental for another week, then have the same problem a week later.

OMG!

To all..........

When I get back home and have a little time, I will update this thread with a couple of photos of the wire that was broken. Possibly change the topic name a little to make it easier to find in a search when another member experiences the same problem.

What a relief to see the Keypad lit up again!!

Thanks again to all who responded. appreciate it!

Justin,

You should have a good trip back home now that this little bump in the road has been fixed.
