I'm in rapid City South Dakota right now getting ready to go east towards Pennsylvania and want to get an oil change. was thinking about going to a Love's truck stop and I was wondering if anybody had ever gone there for an oil change? If so how was the value for what you paid for? Also that was the quality? Or does anybody have any other opinions on a good place while on the road to stop and get oil change and things like that.
Thanks
Bob
Speedco Truck Lube & Tires Locator | Oil Change - PM Service - Tires - DOT &... (https://www.findtruckservice.com/speedco)
Loves bought speedco. Truck lube is what they do. Quick in and out. They do a good job. Not the cheapest but in and out reasonably quick.
I use them from time to time on my semi truck.
Two stroke Detroit owners they will Not carry the straight 40wt oil you need..
Near most medium to large population centers, you will find mobile oil change services that will come to your parking location and change the oil/filter. I have witnessed these operations several times when camping, but never used them. I change my own oil and filter at home.
The nice thing about a mobile oil change service is you can stand there and watch what they are doing. Good peace of mind.
Cost, speed, and quality of a mobile service call will probably vary greatly. Might ask around where you are staying to see if any recommendations are offered. Changing oil and filter is not rocket science, but like any job, it IS always possible to screw it up.
No speedco near me. Changing oil and filter is not hard for me but getting rid of the oil can be. I'm just looking for a quick oil change.
If you take your coach to Loves or any other shop for the lube service, be sure you tell them DO NOT GREASE THE BRAKES!!!!! Many sad stories of oil change techs using incorrect grease on brake calipers, resulting in having to completely purge the calipers. Added time + expense.
Actually, on the brakes (not greasing them) better to remove the zirks and install dead plugs (any auto parts house) if you are having others do LOF's.
I also change my oil and filter. I but the oil at Sam's and the filter at NAPA. Put the old oil back in the containers that the new oil came in. Take the containers to Walmart, they take the oil and get rid of the containers too. Good to recycle.
Pat,
When I got to Love's at rapid City they could do it but it would be several hours wait. I was anxious to get on the road so I passed. There's a Love's in Sioux City and right now I'm at a state park outside of it. I'll check with them tomorrow and see if they can fit me in.
So now I'm at Love's in Sioux falls South Dakota. The guys on lunch break but won't even bother to come out and talk to me just says no we don't work on RVs. And a discussion. I called a couple other places in town and nobody can see me today so I guess it's time to move on to another place. I knew I should have did it myself before I left town. I may just stop at Walmart and buy my own damn oil, since I have the filter.
Our local Wall Mart will take the burned oil.
Yeah, but his 320 holds what...10 gallons? That's a lotta oil to juggle around. Would think, though, that changes would be longer interval with such large capacity. My 8.3 holds five.
O'Reilly and Autozone both take used oil around here. I used a large storage container, lined it with a trash bag (I think I got that from Brett) and drained the oil. Bought the oil in the 2.5 gallon containers (takes 11 gallons) and put the used back in them. That was the most time consuming as I used a cut-off old milk jug and funnel. A drill operated pump would be faster. When most of the oil is removed from the trash bag, dispose of the trash bag and filter.
Before I started I put down one of the cheap vinyl table cloths from the dollar store to catch spills. If I do not spill much, I wipe it off with paper towels, otherwise, whole thing gets trashed.
Getting rid of the used oil is easy, but have not found a good way to dispose of coolant.
Yup, I use a Rubbermade tub and line it with two black trash bags (one inside the other for double protection).
After draining, use a coffee can and funnel to put old oil back into the new gallon jugs and take to WM or other place for recycle.
Always works and you know it is done correctly-- not wrong oil, not wrong quantity, not loose oil filter.................
We have the less deep pan. 9 gallons
Speaking about oil change. Last time I got oil changed at Cummins. There was something special about the oil dip stick marking. I am going to change it myself this time. I had done it when I purchased it so this will be my second round doing it. I just don't remember something about the oil dip stick ... full is not full but too full?
From previous posts I read on the forum, the dipstick markings are not necessarily accurate. If I recall correctly, recommendation it to fill based on volumes stated in the manual and make your own "full level" mark on the dipstick using a file.
Best option to properly find out the correct level on the dip stick is to call Cummins with your exact engine number. They will/can tell you the amount of oil your engine requires due to the oil pan that your engine has. Not all coaches have the same oil pan for the same engine. Once you have this info drain oil and filter then fill with the recommended amount of oil. Now check the dip stick and mark the dipstick with a file or center punch if different than the factory mark on the dip stick.
Mike
How many miles on your oil now? Should be ok for at least 10,000 miles. Most of us change oil more frequently then we really need to.🤔
Detroit 6V-92TA takes 5.5 gallons Delo 100 #40. I buy 7 gallons to carry a little extra. Cost for 7 is right at $96 plus filter. Detroit used to advertise 100K between changes long ago but agree with Gerry, we usually change more often than we need to.

An oil analysis can show if you need to change the oil
Yes they can. I like the idea of sending in an oil sample every 50K or so to check for metals, coolant, etc. Blackstone does it for about $30.Tests & Price List | Blackstone Laboratories (https://www.blackstone-labs.com/tests/tests-price-list/?session-id=2vjbjb55fkdf5a55mccdrk2o&timeout=20&bslauth=&urlbase=https%3a%2f%2fwww.blackstone-labs.net%2fBstone%2f)(S(2vjbjb55fkdf5a55mccdrk2o))%2f
But what do you do if they tell you your engine is on it's last legs and needs a $30K overhaul? Spray car wash for the engine, Krylon/STP overhaul and then Craigslist ad? 8)
Pierce
The sample isn't much good if you don't have a previous sample to gauge how much metal has developed and the time lapse since the last oil change.
Oil is 2 years old but sat alot during that time. I feel better with new oil and filter
Going to do it myself when I get to Philly.
Anybody know what the recommended oil change times for a 10,000 kW power tech generator with the Isuzu engine is?
Check your model against the Foretravel Forum Media at: https://www.foreforums.com/index.php?action=media;sa=media;in=1182 If the same model, change oil at 250 hrs, filter 500 hrs.
Pierce
I think your Isuzu uses 10-30. I know a lot of people use the same oil they use in their coach engine.
That way you only need to carry one type of oil with you.
I don't stay on the road as long as many do especially the full timers so part of what I say doesn't pertain.. I get to do my own service in my shop.. Years past when I was on the road in my diesel rigs I felt worse after getting my oil and lube done on the road than I did before the service.. That tells how I feel about a "tech" fooling with my equipment.. Don't know what I would do if I full timed but would be trying to put a plan in place.. Don't know how one would find a lot that would let you do your own.. Will say this.. If you get thru Ark on I30 I know a place where you full timers and myself can service one and I'm sitting in it right now.. Never get it organized but if everyone of us that has a parking lot and would post where ,these full timers may come by. Cost you nothing here in this shop and I will carry water and fetch tools.. Will even help if not rushed. Good luck Bob the spot your in would make me uneasy.
Maybe we should explain "retired" to the young man?
Anxious to get on the road? What will you do tomorrow?
Art, and yes I know, because it's far too easy for me to roll out of bed at 5:00 AM.
Should have said would have to work at it to get it organized instead of never..Takes people willing people.
Ah I'm a retired old young man. 🤔🥰
Actually the Spot I'm in right now is very enjoyable but the oil and the dipstick still doesn't look too bad so I guess it will just wait until I get to Pennsylvania. I'm in Ohio right now and expect to be in Pennsylvania at my destination tomorrow although my reservation is for the six of July. It's all good. But you're right better to do it myself. I have everything I need to do it other than the oil.
Synthetic oil can go well into 30K between changes.Saves time /money/ anxiety.
Overtighten the steel drain plug in your aluminum oil pan and drain plug could fall out.
Oooh. Journey, Roam, Explore. If you have never changed the engine oil, for belt and suspenders safety, you might want to do your first oil change in a safe harbor. Someplace where you have time to order, or run to NAPA for the means to repair your oil drain. Just in case.
My trick for dealing with the oil is that I drain it into a 20 gallon rubbermaid tub from walmart. $10 or so. Probably don't want to drain hot oil in there so I get the engine up to 130F or so. Then I use a measuring cup (seriously) to scoop oil out into the now empty 1 gallon jugs. Once it's low enough I pour directly from the big tub into the jugs. Then I take all 9 gallons over to advance auto. They give me strange looks as I make multiple trips 4 gallons at a time and fill up their waste oil drum. It could be easier but not much.
I'm replacing my oil drain plug with quick change plugs. I have a heavy duty Rubbermaid container I bought specifically for changing the oil. I'm going to stop by a harbor freight and get a drill powered pump but I do have a 12 volt pump as well to use to pump the oil into the larger containers.
It could be a lot easier. I can either dump into the rolling oil drain and push to the oil barrel or dump straight into the barrel. Then pump later into jerry cans and get rid of 50 gal. on one trip to Jiffy Lube and to 2 other locations that let me dump the cans into their storage tank.
Be sure to get the low profile quick change, do a search, as the regular one can get knocked out. Posts on that happening somewhere also.
Yes I have the low profile ones.
Use any vacuum cleaner attached to the oil fill and you can install the quick drain plug without spilling a drop. I read about it but it worked better than I could have wished. Not a single drop spilled when I removed the drain plug. And this is with a FULL oil pan.
If you puncture the filter and then place a drain container below, you won't spill anything either. Note the new filter installed with the old punctured filter in the drain container below.
Going to replace this quick drain with the flush style.

For each oil change, we buy inexpensive 5-gal Lowes / Home Depot pails with lids, pour Rubbermaid tub into wide opening of pails, put lid on, identify contents, and bring pails to Walmart auto. Donating the pails is a very small price to pay for do it yourself oil change savings. Not only dollar savings, but drain plug damage savings, every time.
We use & recommend NoSpill COMPACT style
No-Spill™ Systems Oil Drain Plug – Official Site (http://www.nospillsystems.com/)
Mine rig came with the No-spill system. It works great. I do all my oil changes at home and use old 20 liter pails for draining.
Burnaby the city I live has a old oil, antifreeze dump.
Yeah I have the no spill low profile. put it on the generator, put it on the Jeep, and that will put it on the Cummings. Went to Walmart today and bought 10 gallons of rotella synthetic oil which I'll change when I get to Philly.
Well I emptied the oil today and put in the drain plug what's the sound that The Donaldson oil filter I have is not the correct one. Bummer so I put the Baldwin filter back in until I can get another one and have him put the oil in yet. Where I'm at there's not a whole lot a places to get stuff like that. I might have to go into Philadelphia for it which I do not want to do. Besides the Baldwin bd103 and the fleetguard 3000 is there anything else I need to look at to widen my search? Also take a look at the picture of the oil drain device I put in. It doesn't go all the way in I don't want to crank on it too much. I do not believe it was cross-threaded it went in easily by hand but I can still see the copper washer showing it looks like. What do you think?
Washer is going to show.. You already are but anyway watch just like you did with the old plug.. wouldn't have gone in easy with your fingers over 1 turn if cross threaded.
Did the washer crush ...???when you tightened it ?
Looks good to me
You can order an Amsoil filter from their site,PM or call me for more info.
Wasn't sure if it crushed or not I wasn't actually looking at it as I was tightening it with a wrench. The problem is is I need to be out of my sight by the end of the week and I don't really want to wait for anything to be shipped to me. I need leave on Friday and it's Sunday night. I could get something shipped from Amazon in 2 days but I'm not sure that that's what I want to do if I could pick it up locally. Would a Cummings Fleet 3000 be the appropriate shelter? Not sure how I got the wrong Donaldson filter.
I guess the question of the day is: Were you able to turn the new fitting in by hand until the seal made contact?
Art & Lynn, old and "experienced"
Check with Oreillys. Wix makes a very good filter too. They should be able to get it quickly.
It doesn't look to me like the washer is crushed, but Bruce Bean's eyes are younger than mine.
If it were me I would remove the new drain plug and compare it to the old one, reinsert the old one then reinsert the new one and make sure thread length and everything else is kosher. Worst case you put the old one back in, fill the pan with oil and be on your way.
Yes. Seemed like. Only turned it a bit then it stopped.the old nut ce out slow, could not had turn it until almost off.
Yes. Was able to turn it by hand most of the way in. The old nut couldn't hand turn till almost out.
The Wix filter is 7746XD which will cross to a NAPA filter
Wherever you get the filter you might take the two plugs and have them both checked with a micrometer for uniformity.
You may have gotten the wrong plug or one from China.
What he said but post the diameter over the threads in thousandths of an inch so we can check to make sure that there isn't a almost close enough crossover between English and Metric thread systems.
I think that's good advice.
Many of the filter makers have the thread size on their sites, takes a little research,if metric it would be something like M 100,Bob,when you get the correct filter, get a spare.
Thanks. Where is one on Amazon a Baldwin. Since you're so expensive that way oh, to get it here by Wednesday, I'm just ordering one for now. When I get to my next place that I can stay for a couple weeks or more I would or another. If worst came to worst I would just reuse the old filter like Chuck said. In fact I did I put it back on keep things clean down there. I thought about putting a hole in the bottom of the filter like people suggest to drain the filteroh, and I can tell you right now that I'm really glad that I didn't. I had some doubts about The Donaldson since I had never used it before and I'm glad I followed my doubt.
Amsoil part number for the oil filter for the 96 8.3 Cummins engine is EAHD3000.
Went to a local NAPA store for some RTU adhesive. Those roads in Colorado knocked my convex mirror off on the driver's side. Asked if he had a Baldwin filter for my coach. He did! NAPA gold one. Almost bought it till he told me the price. Almost 3X the cost of the Amazon price. $78 bucks. Would have still purchased it except their filters are made by wix and I've read they are not the best. So I passed. But got another gallon of Shell Rotella stn oil and the silicone adhesive. Mirror is fixed.
Okay I got the Baldwin filter here today from Amazon to an Amazon Dropbox. I'll be putting it in in the morning
Really?
Where did you read that?
I've used Napa Gold filters made by Wix for years without any problems that I can remember. Must be OK based on the number of Napa stores in this country. Maybe the "Napa Gold" filters are made to a higher spec than the "Wix" labeled ones? Don't know.......
I use Wix on almost everything I own that requires a filter.

OK filter and oil all done. Use another Baldwin and I'm happy with that.was able to recycle the used oil with a local trucking company next to the Napa that I went to. Also change the radiator cap on my Isuzu engine diesel generator and the tubing coming off of that to the recovery container, new clamps.
I read at some point in the past about a filter comparison and the Napa filters made by wix did not come out high on the list of being the best filters. I don't have that link anymore that I know well so if you are happy with them then that's good for you. But based on what I read in the past I'm a bit leery of them. I may not have good information that's okay.
if I get into a place with better internet that doesn't take me 10 minutes to load a small page maybe I'll be able to look for it. If you have better internet than look for a comparison of diesel engine filters and that should start you off on the right track.
I would have liked to have use the Donaldson blue but it seems like I ordered the wrong part number. But the Baldwins are good.
I lost one of my windshield wipers on the road and replaced it with the new one today.
Also repair my Wi-Fi extender antenna with some silicone adhesive. The outer covering I was coming off.
All in all a very productive day.
