Title: 2001 ISM450 ECM Code 111
Post by: dsd on July 14, 2020, 04:29:36 pm
So while attempting to get the soon to be ours coach started in Arkansas we had trouble shot it down to fault code 111. ECM Platform failure. Bubba from Maryville and sons truck repair provided a spare ECM to try and it ran well. After the other faults from being parked since about 2007 were resolved I reinstalled original ECM and repeated code 111. Reinstalled loaner and sent original to ECM King per the advice of several seasoned forum members. Today Frank from ECM King called to say that our ECM was unrepairable. They will locate a serviceable ECM and load the appropriate software for my application. While not good news at least we are moving forward with repairs.  This coach has several other computer control issues that I'm still working on. Slide and level control systems are shorted out. Still could be mice issues, but I wouldn't be surprised if it had a static discharge event (lightning) in the past years under the shade. There are many choices for ECM repair. I think I'm going in a good direction. Will also ask for mine to be shipped back with replacement. May be able to use it as a core on a spare unit, don't know. I was very fortunate that Bubba at Maryville truck repair, Rudy and Mike came up with the answers to resolve my currents issues And enable us to go home.
Thanks again
Scott

Rv salvage yard.
Facebook Foretravel Forum's.

What about this. Where is Ecm used. Other applications. Trucks, marine, even overseas market. etc

Then you could contact truck salvage yards. They could but it out on salvage yard net.
Major salvage yards
La, Houston, etc
Pick a major yard and start asking questions.

Yes they have units on eBay . Most are for rebuilding your unit. Have looked at all of those. My core is bad. If I spend 1500. I can order today. Would prefer to get one that doesn't have 800k miles on it at corroded. Seemed simple when I started.

Anyone know the QUALITY of the "replaces...." ECM.

Would hate to see a non-OEM ECM take out a $30k engine.

Yes I too am concerned  about knock off non OEM parts. I would use if they were shooting at me, but there not yet anyway. I do have a inquiry about the part, I would like to go NEW on a ECM  if possible and affordable. At this point I'm just trying to get the most bang for my buck. Most of the rebuilt units I've reviewed are more like repaired and returned to service. I genuinely haven't found a actual rebuilt unit in my opinion. I'm sure there out there, but I've yet to feel I've found them. Several places do give a lifetime warranty on there service. But there is a difference. Cummins of Nashville quoted me $2005 for a 3681405RX. They said it was rebuilt and rebranded with RX. Also said it could be up too $600 to reprogram. I have no reason to not to believe that. I'm on the fence. I after the first unit once in hand would possible consider ordering some more  because there are no new units available in the USA that I know of. I do have a inquiry but still have no more information.

There are people building various ECUs.  For our Honda V-4 motorcycles I have purchased hand built ignition modules, now these ignition modules also control the spark advance, and I've had good service.  So far.

For the early Volkswagon fuel injection, once again there "is a guy" that builds new fuel injection control computers.  After checking to be certain all initial conditions were correct we installed this new computer and the fuel injection has been working well ever since.  But we did figure out the story behind the original box's failure.

I wouldn't be too worried about a DD ECU built by some guy in China just so long as the engine runs as it once did.  If you're looking for more horsepower that's another matter.

Here's another one

Cummins ISM ECM 3681405 – Diesel ECM (https://dieselecm.com/products/cummins-ism-ecm-3681405)

Looking at the company website it certainly appears to be a legitimate rebuilder of these and many other ECM.  They have some good info links on modes of failure and possible preventatives.  $1500 for a lifetime warrantied ECM - and I'm assuming this is a legitimate co, surely bears checking out some more- does not seem to be a bad deal to me. It appears this cost includes programming to your engine VIN. Might take another look at this supplier.

I've purchased diesel generators from India, powder coating systems, voltage converters, diesel air heaters (Webasto clone) as well as hundreds of other items and all have arrived on time, worked well and still doing so. Even paid over $40K for a Chinese sailboat that had not even been built and I had not seen back in 1980. If you order several larger items like the generators, you will have to pay a broker to make a formal entry, otherwise, it's at your doorstep, no taxes or duty. If you order a product from China off Amazon or ebay, you will have to pay tax.

"There is a hidden cost to having your product manufactured in a plant you don't own." but if you purchase at Walmart, Harbor Freight or any other big box store, there is also a hidden cost.

Exporting is a very competitive business and the overseas suppliers try their best to establish a long term business. A few crooks but 99.9% are very hard working and honest. I bought an approx 4'x8' carpet from the medina in Istanbul. For ten years, the seller sent me a Christmas card.

So I had ECM King send the ECM to Diesel ECM and today GoECM called me and asked what they were to do with it. So they are the same company. Should find out Monday and finally get a serviceable ECM. Lots of work keeping busy so I can wait

Final update. Received lifetime warranty ECM from GoECM. Installed and runs normal as best as I can tell parked. So The ECM shows as having 800k miles on it. Not real happy with that. Not surprised though. They have a cheezy printed label and sealing tamper tags that will never live in a engine bay. Coated the GoECM label with 3m edge sealer and watched the print disappear before my eyes. I really preferred ECM King but they were unable to find a ECM. Hopefully this will be behind me, however my spider sense says get a spare and carry it. I did a very thin coat of DuPont 340 silicone heat sink compound on the cooler area to improve heat conducting to cool the ECM. Will also help prevent corrosion between the two. Test drive would be nice but front seats are still removed for flooring change.
Thank you for everyone involved. Your insight is priceless.
