Title: Anyone know this coach
Post by: JeffW on August 07, 2020, 04:03:49 pm
Hello,
I am interested in this 2011 Phenix and plan to look at it next week.

2011 Foretravel Phenix 4240 | Motorhomes of Texas (https://www.motorhomesoftexas.com/Pre-owned-Inventory-2011-Foretravel-Motorhome-Phenix-4240-Phenix-8031315?ref=list)

I would like to know if anyone knows this coach or has any input for that year? I have been reading and learning quite a bit from this forum. Great group of people.

Thank you in advance.

Jeff

Do a search here on the forum for inverter problem and pto problem. There is a 2010 here that has had major expense with those 2 items.

Grease add point (maybe a zerk) should have been (should be) added to the PTO.
Generator hours are low but there have been some issues with this hybrid system.

Get both checked out.  The PTO add on shouldn't be a big deal.
This coach has many fewer miles and gen hours than the one that had problems. Has this coach had a history of generator issues?

OR, add a WET KIT to lube the splines.

Here is some light reading

12/18 Onan hybrid genset (https://www.foreforums.com/index.php?topic=21797.msg163766#msg163766)

Inverter failure . (https://www.foreforums.com/index.php?topic=32230.0)

Arrived at FOT . (https://www.foreforums.com/index.php?topic=35067.0)

Onan hybrid genset 12/18 kw issues. (https://www.foreforums.com/index.php?topic=36881.0)

Assume you will have generator expense and make an offer with that in mind.  Nice looking coach.

Wouldn't touch it without addressing that generator and PTO read $$$$$ when bad things happen

Assume hybrid will need replaced. Price replacement and adjust offer appropriately. Both owner and MOT should be aware of huge failure rate of these systems. A huge percentage haze already been replaced with traditional Gen sets.

Wow, thanks for the replies. The "light reading" turned out to be heavy information. I'm going to contact Foretravel Monday for a budget number on generator replacement. Good advice.

Don't forget to ask about the PTO issue, that can turn into real $$$as well

This coach also has the 650 Cummings engine which has had a lot of engine failures. Google 650 Cummings

I ran across this searching the  ISX engine. This has been for sale for 5 years? Do you remember the miles it had on it back than, shows 67968 now

While this is a 2012 rig it still has the 2010 dual cam engine with the valve issues.
As others noted the generator is a hybrid and is known to be problematic. That also means there is not a separate inverter as that function is part of this generator package. I would not replace it unless it fails. But for it to really work it needs a lot of battery power.
I would plan on 1,200 A/H lithium to make the 6K inverter part of this shine and shine it can. It will run the ACs overnight without the engine. the 320 amp alternator will not have much trouble charging that large a battery bank.
This is actually a really cool rig being a Phenix and only 42 feet. It also looks really cool.
Have you contacted anyone there yet? If not ask for Jay Davis and tell him, you know Dennis.
The cylinder head and other updates would be about $20K and that brings the HP down to 600.
Generator is about $14K for a 12.5K unit plus install. They do have a couple of other rigs near that age and price you may be interested in. Let me know if you want them pointed out or if I could be of further help.
