Title: New taillights
Post by: bill & jan velting on October 12, 2020, 02:42:02 pm
Instead of spending thousands for an Extreme taillight conversation and rear hatch remod we sent for upgraded Ford Econoline taillights.
Would've loved the hatch remod but as I'm unable to work on the engine myself, thought this was good enough.

Do they have separate turn indicator brake lights? Econoline used one circuit for both.

I have them on my 270. A lot brighter. Use your existing bulbs and wires plugs right in. Seems like 2014 excursion. Not sure about 03 . Old lenses were weathered. You can get smoked or bright chrome backing.

Haven't checked that Craneman.. my helper stood behind and watched while I went thru steps.. I know when I hit the brakes inside the shop in the dark it lights up all the shop that's behind it.Bill May be able to give you some numbers since I hijacked his thread anyway.. If he can't I will check with the woman in my office for a number. Sorry about that Bill.

With the Excursion lights Don and I put on, we had to add a separate brake light. Coach used 4 wire not 3 wire connectors.

LED Tail Lights on 99' U270, now I am committed! (https://www.foreforums.com/index.php?topic=24312.msg189975#msg189975)

Very nice, Bill.

With a couple of diodes and some wire you can make the two rear docking lights come on when the coach is in reverse and still have the right and left option with the switch.

Add one of these to make your brake lights or center light flash four times and then stay on.  Three selectable rates.

These are not LED Headlights. They are daylight running light LED. But they do at least not have the refracting prisms. Better starting point in my opinion.. Reflectors on similar ones I purchased are Poor at best like stock

Love them, putting LED bulbs in brake light/tail light (middle socket). I would like them brighter, all though they were OK. The top turn signal is red now, and vey bright.

Going to take Rogers advice, and install blinker in center stop light.

Was going to tie rear Landing lights with reverse lights using a diode, but decided not to.

Inexpensive upgrade IMO
Snazzes up the fairly bland arse end.

Chris,

If you prefer the top-mounted amber turn signals, you can achieve it with those new lights. The original Ford lights are symmetrical; they will install either way. That is, turn them upside down and switch sides. At some point, Ford eliminated the amber turn signals and made them all red. By putting them in upside down, you wind up with the backup light (clear) lens on the top

Ford had a location post to prevent installing them the wrong way. When I switched mine, the first one went fine. The second one did not line up exactly, and as I tightened the four screws, it cracked the plastic near one of the corners. (With four screws in the corners, we don't need no goshdarned locating posts!) I simply cut of the locating post and solved that problem (easy to do with wire cutters). Just put an amber LED in the backup light socket (now on top) and you have brand new lights with amber (again) on top!

I had intended to put four 4" clear lights for new backup lights (spots in the middle two, and floods on the outside pair). Hasn't gotten high enough on my "to do" list, and my procrastination has saved me four lights. I decided that the original backups, at the end of a 40' motorhome, with no rear window, did not provide enough additional lighting at that location to be useful to the driver. Besides, the rear docking lights do point towards the back of the coach.

Hope this helps someone; it made me happy!  8)
