Title: Air bags
Post by: Dougpad on November 02, 2020, 04:32:50 pm
Hi,

I know this topic is well covered.  I need to replace my airbags.  Blew one in NM.  The previous owner had a spare.  Like an idiot, I threw the old one away before getting the part number.

My coach is a 1996 U295.  Do I have the Firestone W01-358-9448.  I know I could pull one and get the number off the top, but I was trying to avoid that step.

Appreciate your help!

Doug

Doug,

I don't know what brand you have but that is the correct number for your coach. Shop around as there are some real good choices on the market of different brands at a good price.

There are lots of companies that make the same sized bag that will fit. The Conti AS9448 is usually the best deal and made by Continental Tire and Rubber (German) Here is a page with most all the companies and parts numbers: AS9448 by CONTITECH - CONTITECH AIR SPRING 64286/1R11-150/8563 (https://www.finditparts.com/products/7889630/contitech-as9448) There is a discount number to use at one site that gives 10 or 15 percent off on the order. Here is the info:
CONTITECH AS9448 - CONTITECH AIR SPRING 64286/1R11-150/8563
qty 8 - $92.16 each
$737.28
Here are some discounts
10% = THANKS
the above # were what I purchased from finditparts.com.
They offered free shipping. I used a discount code. They will offer up to 15%. But I only have 10%. Now.

Try discount codes here:  Holiday15. Is for 15% off at  Present10 is 10%, Thanks for 10%

You can probably stick a tubeless tire plug into the small hole. The bad bag is usually in the rear with the hole in the back bag facing the tire.

Good to carry a tubless kit with you.

Thanks for the confirmation on the number.  I show the Conti as out of stock.  I found Blacktech in stock for $94 with free shipping.

Blacktech is part of a German firm with the actual bags made in Bursa, Turkey but opening factories in China also.

Title: Air bags purchase and HELP required
Post by: Peter on November 03, 2020, 09:23:21 am
Just a note to everyone considering buying Contitech air bags from Find it Parts.
I ordered and paid in full for 8 bags to be shipped to Canada. Upon delivery it was discovered there were only 7 in the
shipment.
After contacting the company and getting the run around over and over they have informed me that Contitech DOES NOT make these air bags anymore (their words not mine) and cant help me out.    Buyer beware I guess.

If anyone on the site has a new spare Contitech AS9448 they would be willing to sell to me PLEASE PM me and let me know as I desperately require changing ALL the bags...not just 7.  If you also maybe know of another company (I have tried several) that have one that can be had please let me know  I have read on the site is not the best of options to mix and match...

Probably only had 7 bags in stock and didn't want to bother sending a single bag. Easier to refund. Contitech makes dozens of different bags and doubt they no longer will make the AS9448. Blacktech make them for the same price. I don't see a problem mixing bags. It's the cubic inches of air in the the bag, not the material that will effect the ride.

I just ordered 8 from bigrigcomponents.com

$94.99 each.  Free shipping.

You save approximately $5 each over their Amazon or eBay price by going direct to the company.

Warranty: 2 years 250,000 miles

Phone of bigrigcomponents is: 817-453-1900 or 888-481-8008.

He has carried these bags for 8 years and has only had a handful of warranty claims...most of which were sand and gravel trucks.

He has a few more in stock and will be fully resupplied in two weeks.

Just to advise....remarkably I received the other air bag today. Hope to install them soon...Do I have to reset my ride height after the install???

I had ordered 8 of the Contitech's 4 months ago.  I got all mine in short order.  Hard to believe that Contitech would stop making them as they seem to sell out as soon as they are back in stock.

As far as ride height, I did not have to adjust mine at all.  I would think that you only need to do that for the most part when replacing a ride height valve.

Correct, the ride height valve absolutely controls ride height.

The air bag is just "there" and is "told what to do" by the ride height valve.  Old or new air bag should make zero difference-- unless, for example, you accidentally bumped the rod to the ride height valve and threw it out of adjustment when you installed the air bag!

Just completed the air bag change out on my coach yesterday. I found that I didn't need to fully remove the fender covers but just the screws that allowed the lower portion to be pulled out. I only really needed that access for the rear axle forward bag-forward upper bolt and the forward axle rear bag-rear upper bolt. Both of those could have been accessed by removing the shock but I deemed it easier to move the fender cover. Getting the compression fittings loose on a couple was a chore, I don't know what they used for thread sealant but it was some serious stuff. I bent two of the fittings (I had already bought 4 new ones just in case) so that might be something you want to plan for. Having a 1 1/8" Gearwrench is a must a shallow socket isn't deep enough and a deep well is too tall so the ratcheting box end of the gearwrench is the way to go...the rest of the tools are standard stuff, it's maybe 8hrs of work total including setup and clean up. I also installed a new dryer and I'm waiting my new governor and tank vent valves which should arrive today...might as well get it all done while it's drained. Having the 12" safety/maintenance blocks is a godsend for this kind of work..
