Is it possible to change the smart steering wheel on a 1998 U320 with the "newer" slicker looking one from, say, a 2003 U320?
I have heard of stories of the smart wheel failing and am being proactive in my thoughts about a replacement.
Peter
Previous owner changed my 97 U295 to the later one.Don't know procedure, but believe he did it himself.Wish it would light up.
Chris
yup...exactly what I want to do. It looks so much better. I will have to investigate the cost and whether I could get it to light up.
Thanks
Hansom looking upgrade. please keep us updated on what you find out. I suspect there are several of us that might be interested.
Richard
Yes, I got my replacement from VIP. It even has the FT emblem. I replaced mine because the prior owner had successfully worn off all the white lettering on the buttons. No wear on the new one after 14 years.
Wait a minute. Let me get this straight. Some of you think you can improve on this???
jor
Yup, and the spread of you fingers, makes it much nicer for driving
Chris
EDIT:
I think the wheel is like $700.00
Bob said they are under $300.00
Have to replace column to make it light up.
I ask because I don't know. Did they originally light up or was this a later update. Hate that I can't read at night. Was already on the list near the end, but now I'm curious. Mine is the same as in post #1
Scott
Later one's lit up from Factory.
What year did that start?
Scott
Guess I need to see what is wrong with mine, as mine does not light at night. 2000 U320 smart wheel!
I paid about $275 about 6 years ago from VIP, no Logo... they said they couldn't do it because I wasn't the OEM.

For accurate information I recommend contacting the mfg. with the model number of the smart wheel and the model number of the smart wheel controller in your rv. That is what I did with mine when I updated it to the newer design, and unlit. For a lighted wheel it is not just the wheel replacement or the smart wheel controller. The steering column itself is different to carry the current. Or use google, or the search on this forum (vipwheels) and/or other forums.

My '99 Smart Wheel is not lighted.
Must be 2001 newer version prior does not have light provisions. For factory lights.

Although this is an old thread, I thought it would be worth continuing it both for my own benefit, as well as others who might be looking currently.
The unlit wheel on my 2000 U 270 no longer works properly. Cruise, wiper and horn buttons work intermittently and often pushing cruise causes wipers to work. I use cruise all the time and it's worth the investment for my own use as well as eventual resale.
I've emailed VIP to check on replacement but wondered if others have recently been successful sourcing and replacing. I don't care about lighting as my fingers know where to go in the dark by now.
Thanks.
Randy
Curious if you could just replace the electronics in the wheel and possibly the spring conductor. There is also a controller that may be an issue also. My controller has a mind of its own every once in a while also??? I probably should replace all the ground circuits just to eliminate any issues.
I've been having intermittent issues with my cruise control and I believe it's probably the button. My 99 U 320 wheel does not light up but it seems like it should. I have the bio luminous dash and the wheel looks like it matches it. I've looked to see if I could pop off the cover but have not been able to accomplish that and I was afraid that I would make it worse so would be interested in your search.
There are two (or four) screws that come up from beneath the wheel that hold the rubber cover on your smart wheel. Once those screws are removed the cover comes off easily and exposes the micro-switches that control the various functions. Those switches are easily replaced or at least cleaned with electronic cleaning spray.
Richard
Wow!! Me to. Please keep us informed on your progress.
Thanks, Harvey
Thanks Richard I don't remember seeing those screws I'll have to look for them tomorrow. I've got a good electronics cleaning stuff for my Jeep key that frequently loses contact so should be the perfect thing.
Bob,
Glad to be of help. But I should have admitted that I learned of the four screws when I asked for help on the Forum. In June of 2017 Chris, AKA "Numbers" informed me how to remove the rubber covering in the center of the Smart Wheel.
Richard
Chris AKA gracerace posted how to remove the cover and power the lights with a small battery. Can't find it I should have bookmarked it.
Chuck,
I think this is the thread you are talking about.
