I'm installing a surround sound system and the old insulation up there is falling apart. It looks like sound insulation which is really
heavy. Has anyone used anything lighter.
My insulation was falling down too. I used this fence panel, cut to size to support the insulation. Works very well (for now).

Here is a picture of the results. It is supported by the wood frame at the top and bottom of the cabinet.

I just pulled mine out. I may replace at some point.
Thanks for the idea but I have already pulled to old insulation out and vacuumed out the mess. Right now I'm working on cleaning up
the wiring up there and running the speaker wires for the new receiver.
I opted to do a similar fix as Greg (Reply #1). The original insulation, although unsightly and falling down, seemed to still be functional. So I kept it. (as Greg says, for now)
Old Guy
Can you take pics of your new surround install as I am putting together thoughts of doing a surround system to replace the bose system. I am thinking 4K video with 5.1 suround with subs and 43 inch TV with Wyngard in motion...
I reglued the old insulation, and added some spare radiant barrier I had around.
We went a different direction with entertainment. We went several years without turning the TV on in our previous coach, so this is us now. The surround speakers were already gone from the FT. The sub was sent to the street side.
We listen to the dash radio. At home it is tubes and Klipsch.
This is what I replaced my with. I pulled out all the old stuff and vacuumed it all up.
This is adhesive on one side. Was easy to cut, simple to put in, looked good when finished.
It seems to do a good job of insulating that area. Very happy with it.

5.2ch 4K AV Receiver with Bluetooth® connectivity | STR-DH590 | Sony CA (https://www.sony.ca/en/electronics/av-receivers/str-dh590) The reason for this receiver is only one we could get to fit in the top
shelf. I think I will use the sound insulation again.
Hi old guy the link you sent for the speakers was for the receiver

This should work but we ordered them form Costco ca. for a lot less money.
After removing all the old insulation and adhesive, I used a two layer system 1) used Noico Red 315 self adhesive against the inside cap 2) in the right and left cabinets I stuffed R-15 fiberglass batting held in place by L-brackets joined by metal pipe straps. The video disk recorder and video control center is located in the center section and fits too deeply to add any fiberglass batting there. I also relocated our DirecTV satellite receiver from the side compartment to the right OH cabinet.

Hi Bob,
My original idea was to re insulate the entire front overhead with sound and heat insulation, (suggestions???) cut the cabinets to relocate the center one to where the TV was originally and locate the TV to the middle, which would give me more accuracy in the surround sound. This idea has turned out to be rather major than just a redo. Not sure if FT has these cabinets already in stock pre made (any one know? ) but I have seen the center TV in the 2003 and up FT's.
I had the same issue, and found a direct replacement for the same insulation that was up there. But I would not use that same heavy material again.
After endless hours of research in building a Sprinter Van into a camper, I found that using Noico sound deadener, along with Thinsulate Insulation provided a great solution. The distributer of Thinsulate says that you don't even need any Noico sound deadener, and I tend to agree. The Thinsulate by itself would be fine, especially in the motorhome. In the van, I really wanted to deaden the steel drum sound of the van, and really thought it would be better to use the Noico directly on the metal, and then the Thinsulate over that.
Thinsulate is the stuff used in winter gear for insulation. It doesn't absorb moisture, and is a very lightweight material. The Sprinter went from sounding like a cheap work truck when you shut the doors to sounding like a high end Mercedes. The difference from before and after, in terms of sound and heat/cold insulation is night and day. The Noico may have added a tiny amount of extra sound deadening, but probably not worth the money and weight expense.
Thinsulate would be perfect to use up in that TV cabinet across the front of the coach. It is super easy to apply and way easier to work with than the original stuff up there. And I will eventually replace any insulation I can get to in the motorhome with this stuff. It is not cheap, but the couple who distributes it from Oregon are super nice and helpful. They would be able to help you figure out how much is needed, and what thickness you will need.

Money can't buy a better quality loud speaker than Klipsch.. Manufactured 8 miles from my home since the 60's.. The only set I had I lost when my house boat sank in a storm.. Loosing the speakers made me as sick as loosing the boat
Dub that's good to know. I finished tracing all the speaker wires and threw out a pile of wire. If it isn't needed any more out it goes.
I started insulating and I using insulation I saved when I threw out a dish washer and then I will put in a couple of layers of bubble
wrap. We are looking at putting in a larger TV but it won't be now. The previous owner did a beautiful job of installing the one that
is in there now.
While looking for insulation I found this Super Shield Reflective Foam by US Energies. It looks like bubble rap but instead of air
it is solid foam. Has anybody used this product or know anything about it. Type in US Energies to find it.
I've got all the wires for the speakers in place and cleaned up some more wiring. The speakers are supposed to be here next Tuesday.
Old guy would love to see pics of the install and finished product!! Yes
I will send pictures. We were looking at putting larger TV in. To put a 32 inch would be easy if I knew how to build cupboard doors.
The middle cupboard would need to be smaller. We were looking at having a flip down TV in the middle but then the middle
speaker would be blocked. Doing the wiring I have pulled the bottoms out of the left cupboards and that needs to be put back in.
One thing to consider, when replacing the insulation behind the front O/H console, is access to the front clearance light sockets. I recently replaced our bulbs with LEDs and was amazed at how much silicone caulk FT used to seal them to the nose cap. I'm not sure how tough it would be to get them out, but bet foul language would be involved, especially if access from the inside was covered. I'll find out next year, since I'll be removing them before painting the cap.
Greg
You are right Greg. I thought of that when I was insulating it and it will be easier to work on the lights than before.
I tried to take pictures a couple of days ago when I had the bottom of shelves and the cover that the thermostat is attach to off.
They didn't turn out. The third picture shows the wires I will use to hook up the receiver. There are two wires for the rear speakers, the
front speakers I haven't run the wires yet. One set is the wires for the bedroom speakers, another set goes to the radio and the
last goes to the sub woofer under the couch.
How are you ventilating/ cooling you receiver? It will put out considerable heat pushing all those speakers and confined in small enclosure
The cupboard door will be opened while using the receiver, at least that's the plan. The speakers have arrived and I'm in the process of making the hangers.
Grill with muffin fan work well.
Thanks Brett I hadn't thought about that. If it is needed I already have a 110 volt fan that I took off my boot dryer and replaced with a a 12 volt fan when I bought this coach.
Well I finally got the speakers hung. I broke one hanging it and that is the part that I epoxied together. As they aren't to strong
I used goop to help hold them to the brackets that I made. I don't think they were made to hang in a Motor Home. I had to
make new legs for the Subwoofer as the ones that came were too high. The receiver should be here next week.
Well we have everything working. It sounds great. I got the old Bose speakers under the foot of the bed working but one of the
speakers has a power amp in it and needs 120 volt power and there is no receptacle there that I could fined. Do I need to put a
receptacle in there or am I missing something. I have ordered some 90 degree connectors so I can get the receiver in back
further. Pictures to come when the receiver is in the right place.

That's some major audio. Anyone who's experienced tunes thru Klipsch knows it.
Old Guy
In you middle pictures, what is the the box that the two coax wires are plugged into.?? Is that considered your distirbution box for the front and rear TV?. In my TV upgrade I am getting rid of the coax attaching to the actual TV's and running HDMI via cat 6 to each
as they both (and the bay TV) are 4K.
P.S. nice to see what wires are actually there BEFORE i removed the old CRT!!
Peter
The box is the signal booster from the TV antena. The TV in my unit was upgraded by the last owner. He put in a 28 inch TV and
next spring I am thinking of putting in a 32 inch TV. In doing it I think I will get rid of the middle cupboard and have the receiver
stick out where the door was and frame the left hand side of the receiver and make a door above the receiver.
Oh also the old coaxial distribution box I threw away as the previous owner got rid of the rear bedroom TV and I don't care
about having a TV there.
My install is with a 43 inch Sony as main and bay and Sony 32 inch in bedroom. I guess i will trash the signal booster. My setup is King quest 4100 to RF Splitter- to wally and Bell receiver then hdmi splitter to echo down scaler ( for 4k ) - then to hdmi over cat 6 to main tv, bedroom tv and bay tv.
Lots of design work
Will forward pics as the project commences.
Thsi should be fun for me as I really into the audio video stuff and usually use the best products etc.
Peter
Peter do you have Bose speakers under the foot of the bed. I'm wondering where they are plugged into a 120 volt receptacle.
They weren't in when I bought it. I am looking forward to see your hookup.
yes I have the Bose speakers at the foot of my bed. I will probable be installing a second receiver to supply sound to those extra speakers in the bedroom and outside, but that is to be determined.....I have this feeling I am going way over board on the sound and video...but that just me. Using Anthony Gallo speakers fro my surround sound.
Peter where do your rear speakers plug into a receptacle. I have gotten mine going by using the block heater receptacle but that won't
work as I have to have the bed up. By the way mine name is Peter also.
that is a good question Peter...I have never looked as to where they plugged in. I was just going to re wire and run the wire behind the false panels on the driver side upper cupboards to the front. The same routing as I am using to run cat 6 to HDMI to the rear TV.
I will take a look tomorrow.
I have the RCA plugged in from the front to the left speaker and the a wire from the left speaker to the right speaker. There is
a 120 volt amp in the left speaker. If I have to I will wire a 120 volt receptacle into that space but there should be one there.
My '99 has a receptacle at the nightstand
Mine too. I need a receptacle under the foot of the bed.
The 90 degree adapters came in to day and the receiver is all set up. The surround sound is amazing. One of the pictures with
the receiver even with the doorway is what I might do next spring when I put a bigger TV in and the other picture is where the
receiver will be for now. The last picture is how it is for now.
If you're comfortable working with electricity it shouldn't be difficult to add a new box there with the breaker panel there.
Forest it's not a problem to add a receptacle, I just hoping I don't have to do it and it doesn't make sense that there isn't one there.
97 U295 110V receptacles are on both sides of the bed. The plastic covers are brown, I've had customers not know for years.
I went out this morning and did a better look and I found a receptacle below the right hand speaker. I think I might have the
speakers in backwards as it would make more sense that the receptacle is below the speaker with the amp in it and there is enough
RCA cable to reach across. One of the speakers has a adjustment nob in it. Peter when you check could you tell me which side of
the bed the nob is on. I call the right hand side the passengers side.
