Title: Power Tech Generator died
Post by: Dick S on January 20, 2021, 04:45:47 pm
My generator ran fine for 10 to 15 minutes and suddenly died. Like it ran out of fuel, yet the tank is at 3/4.
T/S ideas?
Thanks, Dick

Fuel filter?
Fuel pump?
Fuel line (porous - sucking air)?
Low oil level?
Low coolant level?
Broken fan belt?

Did you look at the panel on the generator? Are there any codes lit or flashing?

Mine in my 2000 was doing that. Checked oil pressure switch and temp switch. No lights would come on when it shut down. Ended up being the control board that the lights are on. Pretty easy to change out it you can use hand tools and have 500 bucks. Call Jeff in the tech dept at power tech

After is cools down see if it will restart.  Could be an over heating problem.  Are there any  LED lights on?

Check that the breaker to the fan is on.

Check that the fan is pushing/pulling air through the radiator.  if not it could be the start capacitor

Check the wires on the control board and make sure they're tight

Start capacitor was my problem, when mine died.

Another thing that could cause the generator to shut down when everything else checks out is the run/stop solenoid.  This opens the fuel flow when the generator is running and shuts off the fuel flow when you press the stop switch.  It should be located on the fuel rack and have a wire or set of wires going to it.  When power is applied it opens the fuel supply, when power is taken off it closes the fuel supply.

The relays in control box have been a cure too. They are cheap $2 each and easy to get. I talked to Jeff about oil pressure sensor and he said it would not cause problem.
I would get those relays and replace them, which is what I did a few weeks ago. They are cheap and if not caused by any item mentioned in  Chucks post suggest you try them.
