Title: Haldex air dryer help needed asap
Post by: Journey, Roam, Explore on February 03, 2021, 03:22:34 pm
So I got the remanufactured haldex air dryer and cartridge model BX 3300100x. Pulled out the old one getting ready to put the new one in and notice that the mounting is different. There are no part numbers on my old one the base looks exactly the same the upper part obviously has a mount that the other unit does not have. Got it from find it parts. They do have a separate part that says it's the mount but of course that is not available at this time. So anybody else have this problem how did you handle it.? I'm not really sure that I want to order a new cartridge and rebuild kit would rather just do the remanufactured one for this time. But I'm not quite sure how to handle this so any advice and help would be appreciated. Thanks Bob

Found that haldex has the bracket in stock but I have to go thru find it parts for it. Waiting for them to get back to me. Also need the band clamp part as well. Clamp Band Kit Part no. DQ6024 Product line Haldex Clamp Band Kit for Pure Air Plus™
Part Number 300074E Manufacturer HALDEX Description Air Dryer Mounting Bracket

I switched from a Haldex to a less expensive Meritor / Wabco style dryer and had to fabricate a mount. The new dryer included a template.

Previous coach, I ordered the specific mounting bracket for the dryer. This coach, I got an exact replacement.

Will the remanufactured dryer not attach to the original mounting bracket with the original band clamp?

I switched from a Haldex to a less expensive Meritor / Wabco style dryer and had to fabricate a mount. The new dryer included a template.
I also switched to a Meritor/Wabco (Polish clone) and just used the steel from the Haldex. Hit the mount with the PC gun and oven and that was about it. A heavy duty filter wrench is needed as the filter is really tight and a garden variety wrench is useless. Amazon.com: Swelgo Strap Filter Wrench, for Heavy Duty, Objects up to 6-1/2... (https://www.amazon.com/Swelgo-Objects-Diameter-Getting-Cartridge/dp/B08MV7K7VS/ref=sr_1_22?dchild=1&keywords=oil+filter+wrench&qid=1612391726&sr=8-22) One 45 degree fitting (about $8 each) and a straight fitting was needed to make one of the hoses reach. Once you have the upgrade in place, it's on a minute or two to R&R.
I may have added a 90 as I looked at the photos.

Thanks all for taking the time to answer my post. Unfortunately the haldex air dryer that was on the coach is different from the remanufactured model I received. On the one that was on the coach the mount is part of the dryer and there's bolts that go through a piece of metal and into it. But on the new one there's nothing like that although there is two threaded holes on the bottom but I don't really think it's supposed to be mounted that way. Because there's connections on the bottom. I tried to upload a photo of the 2 side by side I'll try again. The other thing I was thinking about was just making a mount out of wood bolting it to the metal that the old one was mounted to and then wrapping a big band clamp around it to stabilize it. If find it parts can't get me the mount and the band clamp because the website says it's out of stock but haldex says they have some, then that's what I'll do for now. The other question I have now is I paid $100 chord charge and the car is not the same will they still give me my $100 back or should I just keep this core and rebuild it next time but I don't really want to carry a core around for 2 to 3 years. So I guess when I talk to find it parts tomorrow when they call me on availability of the mount I will ask about the core.

Sorry to hear that. I wasn't aware there was a version with integral mounting. Our 2000, our '99 SOB, and others I've worked on, had the stamped bracket and band for mounting. Assuming the reman is the more common style, it may make sense keep it, and get the parts to mount it, to make life a bit easier down the road. If Find It can't get you the parts in reasonable time, maybe you could get them from a local parts store.

Thanks guys. Gwen from find it parts is going to call me in the morning to let me know if they're haldex rep can get it for them hopefully I'll have it by Friday. I looked on Napa's site and I couldn't find that particular mount listed and mostly everybody has it as backordered. eBay can get it to me but not before I leave here for Mexico. If worse comes to worse I'll just hook the thing up and let it float on the air hoses with some big zip ties holding it in place until I can get it sorted. As usual what seems like an insurmountable problem when you first get smacked with it in the head after looking at it for a bit you tend to see other options. I know that if I have to I can make a mount with a couple pieces of wood that will work for now or just let it float on the air hoses. At least I was thoughtful enough to seal off my air hoses with tape so nothing will crawl into there in the next few days. I really like the new spin on desiccant filter versus the one that is on mine which is bolted down with four bolts. Makes it much easier to change it out. I was going to go with a different style air dryer but I just wanted to get it done and not have to worry about it for a couple years.

Just had a phone call from Gwen at find it parts. After speaking to her last night her haldex representative called her this morning and then she called me and the parts are on order. I found that that was excellent customer service by this company and I will definitely do business with them again in the future for many of my part needs. So I guess what I'll do is install the air dryer today with the electrical and air hookups and finish the install when I get the mounting parts next week. This will at least allow me to air up the coat so I can raise it up and David and I can get started on replacing the eight shocks with Koni FSD's

Installed the new air dryer yesterday. I don't have a way to mount it so it's just sitting partially on the I-beam across the engine compartment. It's pretty secure with three air hoses holding it up as well until I get the mount. Started the coach up today and it aired up easily I didn't detect any leaks from the air hoses there. so at least now I can raise and block the coach so I can start working on the shocks and replacing my vacuum generator and reservoir. The picture show the old unit on the right, new on left. New canister is spin on where the old one was bolt in.

So I'm going through the same exercise. The one on the right is most likely the DA3400 like mine. It's a monster compared to the DA3300x I just got. Could not find the DA3400 reman in the time frame I needed.
Called Haldex and they said part number 107695K mounting kit should work. What did you end up using ?

So, I just ordered a kit from Amazon for my Haldex Air Dryer and went to change it yesterday. Could not break the filter loose, so went to my strap wrench, still no help, then a 1/2 inch 2 foot breaker bar and I twisted the metal bracket that Pierce shows a photo of. Got mine from Napa at the time. Wow! How tight is this filter. Oh, I had a 3 foot cheater bar on the breaker bar and with lots of pressure, the strap failed. Not quite what it was intended for, but now what? So our son works for a trucking company here in Nashville and the mechanic that works on the trucks came through and let us borrow what he uses. It worked, but when it broke loose, it sounded like something broke, but then screwed off okay. Nothing serious inside and replaced the cololasing filter inside as well. I made sure I used the supplied grease on the seal to hopefully insure an easier experience next time. Filter really didn't look that bad and I believe it was replaced when we purchased the coach by MOT. It did not look like they used any grease on seal and of course, these filters trap water and it had some surface rust on the base and the filter itself, so it broke loose. I ended up using the clamp filter wrench the mechanic gave my son and it worked. So I would recommend keeping one of these in stock. It has a 1/2 inch hole on the side of the wrench and is heavy duty, not the ones you see on Amazon. This is a $50 plus dollar clamp that you have to get from Napa or Grainger, etc. Hope this helps the next person trying to get that filter loose!

Silicone grease is your friend. Filter is only hand tight. It doesn't take a lot of torque to seal that big filter up. Same thing with fuel filters, oil filters. Doesn't take more than just a thin film to work of the silicone grease. It stays in place till removed. Can be real frustrating for sure, even makes it worse knowing how simply it can be prevented. Yes Chuck, I twisted the chrome metal bar and when it did, I went to the ground, as I had some mojo on that baby! Luckily missed the tow bar in doing so. I know that strap is not intended for a cheater bar on the breaker bar, but when you can't get something loose.............

I haven't had a chance to read all the responses here but the replacement filter kit for the Haldex Pure Air Plus comes with instructions that specifically state an anti-seize agent should be used when installing the new filter. Sorry if this has been mentioned already.

Elliott, they actually supply the grease in the kit! Someone just was either too lazy to read or didn't care. This also happened when I went to change the air cleaner on the generator the next year and found the new one they put in with the rubber seal still attached to the side of the filter with tape. Suppose to be installed in front of that wing nut. Was not happy when I found that out either! Just another reason why I try and do as much work as possible, even at 78. When you are dumb, you gotta be tough!
