Title: Another issue! Steering Box Leak
Post by: juicesqueezer on February 03, 2021, 06:37:15 pm
Well, did a walk around the coach first thing this morning as we are traveling to Benson, AZ and then Mexico for a short visit.  Well, found a spot on the ground next to the gen box access door and realized it was oil.  Opened the door and found lots of oil and a leaking steering box.  So, checked the oil level and found it down 1 quart, added and check about each 100 miles to make sure no issues.  Now, it is dripping a lot and I have a bowl under the box to collect the oil.  Not sure if there is someone in Benson that can pull the box, as I want to get a blueprinted one from Shepard.  Anyone know of any service in that area?
Thanks in advance,  Joe

Blueprinted by Sheppard or REDHEAD? Was not aware that Sheppard did blueprinting.

Thanks Dub;  I am actually meeting up with Twig in Why for the trip to Rocky Point.  Will call him tomorrow.  Red Head can ship the reconditioned one to us by Tuesday, so will have to change some plans.  Leaking pretty bad!  Have been checking the steering box on a regular basis and wow, the thing is pouring out oil now and putting a film all over the side of the coach.  UGH!

In a few days and a tumbler size margarita all will be well. Keep us updated on your progress with the box.

That sucks joe! To bad that didn't happen last week when you were in Baytown, there is a place in Houston, Chalk's, that rebuilds them and they have a good reputation. And Rudy knows someone that would do it. They rebuilt mine in my 2000..  good luck

I was just in Benson the other day. On my way out here to Salome Arizona. It's funny because I had just made a comment about not changing your steering just because other people are doing it and then I was under the coach looking for my vacuum pump when I looked at the steering box and realized it had been leaking oil as well. So that may be something I have to do in the near future. Joe when are you going to Rocky point? I'll be heading there on the 25th or 26th of February.
Where you staying when you get there?
Bob

Hi Bob;  We will be down there around the 8th or 10th of this month and staying a month at Playa Bonita RV park.  Look us up, we would love to see you!  David Munoz is doing our captain chairs.  May have to find a big truck shop here in Benson to R&R the box and get one shipped in from Red Head.  Talked to David and he does have one $$$$$$$$!  Not real happy with the added on $300 for stocking that unit!  So, $796 for Red Head, $500 deposit and $103 shipped each way!  Ouch!  Oh, plus tax!  This thing is really leaking a lot, so will have to bite the bullet if I can find a truck repair shop close by!

I'll be down there by the end of the month and I will definitely look you up. Originally was going to stay at playa Bonita but Antonio said I could stay at his shop with electric water and sewer and not be charged extra so I think that's what I'm going to do. I'm doing a full body paint. Still haven't decided exactly what I'm doing yet with that and whether or not I'm going to do a mural or not on the back but I have a general idea so.
Yeah it looks like I'm going to have to get a rebuilt redhead unit as well just not sure when I'll do that. I'm due to go back to New Hampshire in early May I have a reservation for the 8th which is when they open up their campgrounds and I at this point will be there for 2 months. probably not a good idea to change it out there they may not be okay with it. So I may have to have it taken out in Mexico drive it across the border ship it get the new one and install it in Mexico with some help. It's either that or drive back to text hubs place in uvalde Texas and do it there.
I don't need any upholstery work done in the coach but my seats in the Jeep are in pretty rough shape. Only problem is is that I have heated and cooled seats in the Jeep and they need perforated leather and I understand it's not something you can find in Mexico. I was going to order some but I haven't gotten around to it. Maybe I'll just do it next year. I'm also thinking about getting a Jeep painted to match the coach. I'll talk to Antonio about it when I get there and see what kind of prices we're talking about.

I am looking at replacing our steering box also in the near future.  I thought they had a pretty slick setup in providing the spare box but didn't realize there was such an upcharge!  Do you get back any of the $300 or is that just a convenience fee?

Convenience fee.

Worth it unless you are able to leave the rig down for 2 plus weeks Also, if your NAC has no serviceable parts there might be a up charge. I don't think that is the case with the core (check) So it is part service charge and part insurance policy

David;  you don't get the $300 back, only the core deposit!

Agree Tim and most places don't want you coach sitting in their bay waiting on a new Red Head.  Time is money!
