Title: start capacitor replacement for powertech generator 10K
Post by: Lt403 on February 28, 2021, 06:29:46 pm
hello to all,
back on the 17th of Feb my generator stopped running and indicated an overheat light at the panel. I checked the oil and restarted the generator with no problem but noticed my cooling fan was not running. After about 10 minutes the generator stopped working again with an overheat light at the panel. The fuse for the fan had not tripped. I figured the motor had died and it was time to replace it. Through the help on the forum I learned about the start capacitor that was located behind the squirrel cage and that it should also be changed with the motor.

After purchasing the motor and start capacitor from FOT ($225.00 out the door) and picking it up, i started back to my friends house to do the work there.
I removed the windshield washer bottle for some extra space then loosened the clamp to the corrugated hose on the left side of the fan housing.

Next i took off the cover to the junction box located above the fan housing where the fan motor is connected. Inside the junction box was the start capacitor which was a surprise. It had some rust on it but when i inspected it it showed no signs of deformity.

I installed the new one and couldn't resist starting the generator to see what would happen. The generator and fan started right up. The new capacitor is longer and will not fit in the junction box so for nor i have secured it outside the box.

I decided to leave the fan motor alone for now so i cleaned it up and reinstalled everything i had undone.

Tested the generator for 2 hours with both A/C's and the aquahot running, no issues.
