Title: Potable water hose replacement
Post by: dsd on March 25, 2021, 09:50:29 am
So I had looked for a easy replacement water fill hose and never found something that was simply plug and play. The correct hose was a special order only which is fine but a pain if you have to change the hose again for any reason. I really wanted to be able to just use a standard potable water hose with no special specific ends or special tools to change. Tried using a additional 45 degree fitting to allow hose installation but not enough room. Ended up modifying the 90 degree street L fitting to about a 135 degree fitting and was able to just use a store bought hose now. Hose doesn't kink now either at transition. Pain to do but easy to change in the future. Also added a pex shutoff valve just past the hose reel in case the back flow check valve fails again.

When I replaced mine about six years ago, I looked, but could not find a 35' x 1/2" potable hose. I wound up buying a 50' x 1/2" hose. I took it and the end fitting from the old hose to a local pipe fitting store. They cut my hose at 35' and swedged the old fitting to the cut end. Installed it and the new hose all fit on the original reel with no problems.

Until a few months ago when the hose started leaking from that end. I thought it just needed to be removed and reinstalled with fresh Teflon (probably a little tighter than I had done). That's when I discovered FOT did sell the original replacement water hose for $168.64. Sometimes you have to be VERY specific about what you want the service people to accomplish.

It was another lesson learned; just a little more expensive than I had assumed.

Hope this helps,

Trent

Trent I actually have a Swedging machine for hydraulic lines and can do hose lines. But I want to be able to change it on the road with a standard hose. Think the portable water hose from Amazon was $32. Makes me feel like I made 130 bucks making the fittings LOL

Scott, what fitting did you make other than modifying the 90? I have never had mine out and if I ever do have to would like to copy your modification.
