Title: Heater core replacement
Post by: dans96u295ft on April 15, 2021, 11:49:03 am
I know there are old posts on this subject. Mine is doomed to fail because of age. Any tips on replacing it are appreciated. If I remember, it's a tough job taking the dash parts out???
Thanks

The hardest part for me was getting the right part (which never actually happened >:( ). I would suggest pulling your old heater core and have it in front of you for comparison when you open the box on a new one. I purchased one from Foretravel and had it a year only to discover that they sent me the wrong one after I pulled mine out. To add insult to injury, not only would they not take it back but they couldn't even tell me what the one they sent me fits so I could sell it to someone who could use it. I bought another one from FOT parts that I was able to fit after modifications to the plenum.

I am pretty sure I posted fairly extensively about the heater core installation. You may not have the same issues as ours is a 99' U270 and so may have a different  heater core.

Edit: to add picture: The old heater core on the right and the first one FOT sent me.

Why on earth would FT bury it in the dash like that. So I assume it's in the middle of the dash since I really can't see where Don's is? Can it be bypassed easy if it leaks?

It is easy to bypass at the heater valve. Just cut into the heater hose that isn't connected to the valve and disconnect the bottom hose from the valve and join them together preparing to catch the coolant that comes out of the core. The heater valve on ours is located just to the left of the top of the generator compartment opening. Fairly easy to see when you open the generator hatch. Here is a picture of the HVAC assembly where are you can see the heater cores placement in the dash.
