Title: generator overspeed
Post by: madmaxx on June 27, 2021, 10:18:58 am
Hi all!

My rig has the power tech PTS IL10EFT genset.

when I crank it off and load it up, it runs great for 5-10 minutes then shuts down with an overspeed led on the control box.

Has anyone had this issue and found a solution?

I have looked through several of the service manuals on Powertechs site but none address overspeed in the troubleshooting.

Any help is appreciated!

No direct experience with this problem.

If I was trouble shooting, my first question would be: What does the generator sound like when this occurs?  Does engine speed (RPM) increase?

If the engine speeds up, then it could be a mechanical malfunction with the governor device.  The engine must run at a specific RPM (usually 1800 on larger units) to maintain correct generator frequency (hertz).

Just armchair guessing here.  I always look for the simple solutions first...

You can buy a inexpensive meter that will tell you (among other things) the frequency being put out by the generator.  Just plug into any outlet with generator running, and push the appropriate button on the meter.  These are usually sold at Lowes, Home Depot, and other places.  Highly recommended tool to carry in your coach - many uses!

Look at the wires going into the ES-52 controller, that's the one with the led lights usually mounted inside the control box on the generator.  Due to the vibrations these wires can have a bad connection or broken strands.
Easy to remove the 2 screws holding it and pull it out enough to inspect the wires.

It runs really nice. No noticeable rpm change before it shuts off. I was thinking the controller, rpm sensor or fuel actuator, but Jeff at Powertech immediately told me to check the voltage. He said that if the voltage is too high, it goes into overspeed fault. He said I may need to adjust the voltage regulator.

Jeff also told me that there are no manuals available for my generator. They won't even sell you one. I guess they deleted them all after a certain date. crazy.

I will slap the old needle multi meter on it and see what it's putting out and figure out how to adjust the regulator if that is the problem.

I will also check the connections in the control box as well.

thanks for the response guys!

Rex,

Does your generator have a Kubota or an Isuzu engine?

Mike,

I believe it's the Kubota.

Jeff also told me that there are no manuals available for my generator.

Rex,

The reason I ask about the power unit is if you had an Isuzu I have the manual for it (and would get you a copy) but not the Kubota.  Hopefully there is another member that will have one with the Kubota and can help you out.
