Title: 1992 30ft Grand Villa questions
Post by: SnipeATX on August 18, 2021, 12:17:19 pm
Hello all, I just got a call from my neighbor.  Ever since we got our Foretravel, they have had a serious lust for it.  We've talked a few times about bulkhead issues, suspension, etc.., but nothing serious.  Today they sent me this.  I've never seen a shorty like this, up close.  Are there any big differences with these that we should be aware of?  Any thoughts or experiences with this is much appreciated.

Thanks!

Front-engine, likely, which is going to be quite a bit different than a pusher

Michelle beat me to it!

Only actual 30' coach in 1992 was the GV front engine on a 190" wheel base.  Cummins 5.9 was optional engine.  Scroll to bottom of page linked below for specs.

In my old age (77) I have stared looking at Foretravel again and have run across a add for a 1992 Grand Villa with the 5.9 Cummins engine, add doesn't say but if I am not mistaken that is a front engine diesel, is it not?  If so wouldn't it be a little noisy? Also this is supposed to be a 30 footer would that engine be lacking in power for that motorhome?

Appreciate your input

See this thread, which has links to previous discussion of this coach configuration as well

I'll merge the two topics if it makes sense....

Guess it makes sense to merge them, I didn't see that message when I posted but it is the same RV

5.9 Cummins has plenty of power for a 30 foot Foretravel. Once you are sure the "killer dowel" issue has been addressed or NA for the engine you are interested in, they are available in a variety of horsepower and 2 valve or 4 valve heads. One of the most popular diesel engines made.

Any motor sitting between the seats is going to be noisy, hot and sometimes smelly. Is that coach a front engine?

We have the U225 with the 5.9L Cummins inline-6 and in our opinion it does a perfectly fine job of pushing our weight down the road.  Up the on ramp to the limited access highway, leaning forward doesn't help, cursing doesn't help and worrying what other people are thinking doesn't help.  So sit back and enjoy the view.  If I'm riding faster than I can walk, I'm happy, and I know that soon after we're all on the level the cruise control will be set for 2,000 RPM and we'll still be enjoying the view, only faster.

If I need to go fast, I take the motorcycle.

After doing the math (liter to cubic inches) I think of the 5.9L (350 cu in) as "the little engine that sometimes could and usually does.
I realize diesel engines put out more Hp than gas, but that size engine does have its place in the RV industry and does a very admirable job with what Hp it generates and the MPG it can attain. Sometimes the duty to what it is subjected is/was wrong. Not the engine's fault.

I put a 7.3 195 hp turbo Ford/Int. w/o intercooler in a 29 foot SOB years ago. It was a lot faster with one exception, than all the other diesel RVs from the stop light to grades. A 5.9 should be about as fast in a 30 foot Foretravel. With fuel added to the mechanical Cummins engines or chipped, they are rockets.

Based on the previous threads, the 30 footers are FREDs - front engine diesels

Ever heard the term:"Rode hard and put away wet?" Applies here from a source I heard from re this unit.

Or perhaps OFED if on the Oshkosh chassis.

I've always seen it with the "R" in there, but yeah.  So FrED?  ;)
