Title: Windshield gasket
Post by: Want2rv on September 18, 2021, 07:51:09 pm
I heard wind noises on the passenger's side for quite a while. Found some sawdust on the driver's side last year and on the passenger's side recently.
After inspection I found the windshield gasket was compromised.
I ordered a new gasket for $425.00, now looking for an installer.
The first quote was for $1000.00 or so to reinstall my existing windshields with any broken windshields on my dime!!!
Does this sound legit?

Charlie,

Let us know where you are and perhaps someone will have an installer suggestion.

I'm in South Jersey, 10 miles from Philly.

I called Coach-Net and they had nothing!!
I purchased the gasket from RV Glass Gurus for $420.00, they said the approximate cost for install would be around $500.00.

I had 2 windshields replaced w/o gasket for 2300 bucks. Windshields were 800 each. So I'm guessing labor was 700. And if you have a weak heart, don't watch.

The sawdust just might be something left over from the build process that finally found an escape outlet,
Not termites.
Ever go thru FOT's tour and see all the dust in a coach before it is detailed out for delivery? LOTS and LOTS of dust, sawdust, and stuff all over!

Save the new gasket for when you replace a broken windshield. For now use a sealant at the air leak.

Removing good glass and putting it back with a new gasket is quite risky.

Also gasket problems can be caused by the coach's fiberglass windshield opening, not the gasket.

I think that is very good advice, Barry!
I am concerned that they will break the glass and that will open a whole new can of worms!!!
Thank you!

What made you determine the gasket was "compromised" ?

The wind was whistling on the front passenger side. I thought it was due to the support for the main awning or the cb antenna.
When I inspected, I found a long break in the gasket behind the awning support, the gasket string was hanging out!!!
I covered it with some rubber tape and the noise went away during  my trip from South Jersey to New Hampshire.
Upon the return, the wind noise returned after driving on the elevated stretch of the NJ turnpike, quite bumpy!!
My tape held up, but the top, passenger's side opened up.
I just ordered 3M Auto Glass Urethane Windshield Adhesive, 08693, 10.5 fl oz Cartridge
Hope that's the right choice.

the gasket string was hanging out!!!
That seems to be the "locking strip" for the glass to the seal...Is the glass cracked ..?

The glass is not cracked.
Tomorrow I'll take and share some pictures.

OK, having gone thru a similar issue this summer, first thing, contact Foretravel. I purchased my weatherstrip from them quite a lot cheaper than yours. They also gave me the correct advice on removing the glass and the correct install. Price from them WITHOUT glass, around $1700.00 buckaroos. Glass would have been 800 a side (got mine out and in, no breakage). My local shop used Foretravel's instructions, and wound up costing me 1200.00 plus a 216.00 factory w/s.
PS, they will guide you to the correct sealer, also..... As you can see, it was a mess!!!!!!!
