Title: PLEASE CHECK ALL YOUR BATTERY CABLES FOR WEAR!!
Post by: 442john on October 07, 2021, 11:08:29 am
Folks I have a Barth, long story, but in looking things over I found all the original b, had battery cables, after 33 years of service, had MAJOR CRAKING and a lot of bare wire showing.  The cables that went up to the switch inside the coach, something I never looked at before were in bad shape too.  It's a wonder it didn't burn to the ground, so please just look at all 12 volt battery cables for cracking and bare wires,
blessings

Good advice, this is what I found right after I bought my coach. Tag air line rubbing on positive battery cable.

Hydraulic lines too.  Zip ties on hydraulic and fuel lines can cause premature failure there too.  It is so important to check all lines

Once I saw a Big Foot class C motorhome almost burn to the ground.  The rv dealer steam cleaned out the battery compartment on the used rv.  Then at the walk thru with the new customer, the customer requested pulling out the battery slide out.  Some of the aged insulation on the positive battery cable had blown away from the steam cleaning.  Now when pulled out it contacted the grounded metal frame sending hundreds of amps thru the cable causing it to ignite into flames all the plastic insulation all the way back to the starter motor.  The tech quickly grabbed a fire extinguisher and put it out.  Even the tech was surprised by how big and hot the flames got before it was put out.  The customer took delivery of the Big Foot after being given a three year unconditional warranty on the entire electrical system on the chassis and rv.  The dealer was lucky the customer was a retired VP from Ford in charge of parts for South America and understood stuff happens.  So yes.....check your 12v cables.

Years ago, a coach was coming to me for flooring and about 2 miles away he called and said he was on fire. The battery cables had chafed on the support platform and had a direct short. Fortunately, a couple fire extinguishers stopped the spread.

Good tip, there are several ways for a coach to catch fire other than a refrigerator and all need to be tidy.
