Title: Air Leveling Won't Start
Post by: scrouch on April 05, 2022, 04:25:32 pm
I have a 1994 Foretravel U300 when I hit the air button on the panel the lights come on but when I hit it a second time to start the leveling process nothing happens. Any guidance on what I should try/look at/replace would be greatly appreciated as I am new to the rving world. Thank you!

Welcome to the Forum.  We are always happy to assist new coach owners any way we can.

Your '94 U300 should have the HWH 600 Series leveling system.  If you do not have the manual for your system, there is a link provided below.  Scroll down to the 4th or 5th page, where Automatic Leveling is described.  If your coach does not act as stated in the manual, go to the trouble shooting steps and follow them exactly as written.  Do not skip steps or jump ahead.

In order for auto leveling to "do something" two basic requirements must be met.

1.  First - the coach must be out of level.  This means (after you push the AIR button twice) one or more yellow lights are illuminated on the control panel.  No yellow lights - nothing happens.

2.  Second - if the coach cannot achieve level by releasing air from the bags, then it will try to add air to the bags (raise the coach).  To do that, the system must have air pressure in the front and rear brake tanks (pressure showing on dash air pressure gauges).  It will require at least 90-100 PSI in both tanks before the auto leveling system can add pressure to the bags.

Take a look at the manual - follow the steps to test the leveling system - and get back to us with the result.

Thank you for the manual I did not have that. I should have been more specific regarding the initial problem, the Air light would not stay on after pressing twice and turning the key to off. That was most likely human error as it seems to be doing exactly that now. While I was running through the trouble shooting steps everything seemed to work as expected. My only remaining question is when trying to raise the coach using the auxiliary compressor with the engine off doesn't seem to happen. I can hear what I think is the electric hum of the compressor and the exhaling of gas when releasing the up button, but the coach doesn't seem to raise at all. Is that the behavior I should expect? The up buttons will raise the coach with the engine running.

Aux compressor is quite small and condition unknown

To add to Scott's comment, don't expect much action from the weak OEM aux compressor on your coach.  Even if it is in perfect operating condition (which is doubtful) it outputs a very small volume of air.  It is mainly intended to make very minor adjustments in the attitude of the coach during auto-level operation.  If you expect it to fill empty air bags or raise the coach off the hard lower stops, you will probably be disappointed.  Best to do the heavy lifting with the big engine running, get the coach leveled where you want it, then shut off the engine and activate the auto-level.  See how it does from that starting point.

How well your HWH auto leveling system works depends a great deal on how many air leaks you have.  You can search this Forum for the subject "air leaks" or similar keywords to get many excellent tips on where leaks are likely to occur, and how to correct them.

Ditto on what Chuck says.  Do your initial leveling with engine running and you'll have all the air you need.  :))
