Title: Water in front steering axle,
Post by: Mr B3 on April 08, 2022, 01:10:35 am
Took my coach out for a 600 kay drive and a few overnights,  free camping,
On the way home, I hear whats definitely a shot bearing,
I had oil seepage on the front left hand wheel covers,
So I took the wheel and cover off, Then took the axle cover off,
It was full of water,
I got to use my new 20 Ton Jack and my 3/4 socket set.
8 feet of pipe on the bar to break the wheel nuts off the hub,
I dont know how the water got into the axle bearings as its all sealed,
Any way I filled it to the line on the cover and spun the hub,
It has almost stopped the karked bearing noise,
At least it wont seize up and destroy the axle and bearings now,
Looked online for a repair idea,
Decided its too big a job for me,  As I dont have a 350 FTLB Torsion wrench to tighten it with,
I am just waiting for the Mechanic to ring me and tell me its fixed,

Big Rig,  All they do is repair big trucks,
I decided to get it greased fully and have the Brakes adjusted while its there,
So it should be right to go for a long while now,

Check to see where the roof edge rail drips on.  Mine used to drip directly onto the hub cover.  Without the hub cap, water could get sucked into the little red cap.  I drilled a hole on the roof rail and added a small piece of wire to promote the water from running down the side of the bus.

Check to see where the roof edge rail drips on.  Mine used to drip directly onto the hub cover.  Without the hub cap, water could get sucked into the little red cap.  I drilled a hole on the roof rail and added a small piece of wire to promote the water from running down the side of the bus.

Mine did that before I built my shed for it, The water ran down the side of the coach and onto the wheel,
I didnt think it could get into the axle as I have a hub cap cover on it,

But now that you mention it, It could have filled the inside of the hub cap with water, and with temp changes, It could have sucked the water in thru the little red cap breather if it was submerged behind the hub cap,
As thats the only way it could have got in there, The little red cap isnt leaking or the case its sitting on,
As I havent driven thru any deep water,
That also explains why the oil was on the tyre, As I drove the coach, The axle has heated up pushing the oil out the little red Breather,
Leaving just the water sitting in the axle case,
The inner seal in my hand looks to be in good condition before it was removed from the axle,
It was damaged removing it from the axle,

I now need a new Inner seal, as I cant get one here in OZ,
Its in the wanted to buy post I put on here,

I was hoping to go away for the Easter weekend to the Port Fairy music Festival, About 700 miles return,  My coach would not have made it that far, I will stay home now,

Current Timken part number is 370120A
Found one in TN for $105.56 but wasn't given a contact.
Also went on the internet and got several hits for prices ranging from $66 on up to over $200+ for the same bearing.
Seal is 5-1/2" bore x 7-1/4" O.D.

Weird--way different size than what I got from Weimer Bearing Company here in town.
Hopefully Brian can clarify dims.
Elliott, your dims seem more realistic.

Hi all again, and thank you for the quick responses,

The seal is 5-3/8 OD  4-1/2 ID  and 7/8ths wide,
National Bearing number is B37012  BGO

Just had a bright spark moment, Graeme Mackay had his front end done up with new King Pins,
He is local to me if he hasnt left for WA yet,
I will ring him tomorrow and ask where he got his front end bearings and seals from,
He also had a hell of a time getting parts for his 1986 Grandvilla,

The Timken one Norm found is way to big, Thanks Norm,
I cant open the one you sent me in the email, Elliott, Error 404,
