Title: Front steering Rockwell Axle Model No. identification
Post by: Running Odometer on May 08, 2022, 10:59:45 pm
When checking my 91 U300, I think front wheel seals are leaking. Driver side has no oil left, passenger side has very little oil left. There are oil stains on the tires as you can see on the picture. I probably drove with dry hub for quite some time.

After watching few videos, I think I might be able to change the wheel seal and inspect the bearing by myself. But I have no clue to determine what parts should I buy.

Here is the information I found from the axle
MFG: Rockwell International
Model No: 2FF 941CAX602

I couldn't find any information regarding this particular model. Closest one is Rockwell FF 941

What parts or tools should I buy?

Wheel bearing locknut socket, what size should I buy 2-5/8 or 2-1/4 or others?

Amazon.com: OTC 1922 Wheel Bearing Locknut Socket - 6 Point, 2-5/8" Opening... (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000O8462Q)
or
Amazon.com: OTC 1920 Wheel Bearing Locknut Socket - 6 Point, 2-1/4" Opening... (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000O867B4)

What wheel seal should I buy?

Amazon.com: Stemco 392-9131 Drive Wheel Seal Set,Gray : Automotive (https://www.amazon.com/Stemco-392-9131-Drive-Wheel-Seal/dp/B002D469AG)

or
Amazon.com: Genuine Stemco Wheel Seal - 309-0973, Gray : Automotive (https://www.amazon.com/Stemco-Guardian-Hub-Seal-309-0973/dp/B002D407C2)

In case I needs to change the bearing, what bearing should I buy?

Do I needs to pack the bearing with grease then add oil? or no need to pack the bearing with grease, just add oil?

Sorry for this many questions. I was trying to search the forum, but I tried to use Rockwell as keyword, not many posts returned.

Thanks in advance!

All the oil on the outside of the tire isn't from the wheel seal. If it is leaking the oil would be
on the inside of the tire. The oil is either coming from the gasket or the plug.

As Peter posted not a seal problem. If you ever need to do seals or bearings you won't need to buy that socket. The nuts can be adjusted with large channel locks following instructions located on the Forum or web.

As far as trying to pre order seals and bearings you will most likely have to go and buy what you need once you pull down and see what you really have and return what you have pre ordered.  There is too many combinations that you may have.

That wheel hub has a small oil sump in it that you can't drain all the oil out of. Now if you think that is enough to drive across the country on you will sure be setting on the side of the road. It is just enough to set your bearing play.  Forget the grease idea as it will throw off your reading on setting the bearing end play.  Once you change bearings fill with oil and rotate wheel by hand. You will need to do this several times to get the oil to the full mark on the window.

Your not being able to find info on Rockwell axles tells me that you might want to avail yourself of John Michaels at fcccservice@daimlertruck.com and see if he can provide the info you need on your axle.
Supply your current info, VIN #, axle part #, chassis #, and he will most likely be able to supply the info you need.
(This is IF your chassis was made by Oshkosh Truck)
Brian--Mr B3 in Australia just went thru trying to find replacement inner seals.
Freightliner/daimler bought the Oshkosh Truck coach chassis design and info, so Oshkosh Truck no longer has anything related to that group of chassis.

Looking at your photograph, and spying the wrong type of sealant around the hub, I suggest starting with some wrenches, a plastic scraper and a manilla folder.

Take the oil hub off.  Clean both surfaces down to bare metal being careful not to scratch the sealing surfaces, and make a new gasket using the manila folder's paper.  Unless of course you find an o-ring groove.

Re-fill with something like hypoid gear lubricant.

Looks to me like you could just buy reply number 3 and get the gaskets and new plastic pieces, after time the red piece wears
and/or gets plugged at the hole in the center creating a leak.

Looks to me like the wheel seal. Oil has pooled while sitting inside rim and worked itself out the holes to ouside when the wheel spun.

Amazon also sell more complete kits. This one may or may not be the correct one: Amazon.com: 4 Pack of TORQUE 343-4009 Aluminum Hub Cap for Trailer Axle... Jack your wheels off the ground and spin the wheels to check the bearings. If the bearings
are bad pull the wheel or wheels and you will be able to get the parts at a local bearing shop.
Don't pack the bearing when you use oil. Do it one way or the other.

Can you post a pic of the inside of the wheel and tire?

I think the leaking is pretty bad, a lot of oil on the brake pad

That is grease not oil your wheel is not showing any seal leakage.

Chuck is right. If the seal was leaking it would it would be on the rotor, that's what make
a leaking seal such a pain as it wrecks the brakes. If your bearings are fine clean up the area
fill it up with  oil and go for a drive and you will find out where it is leaking.

That is good news. I thought those are the oil leaked from the hub. If the wheel seal is not leaking then the hub oil has to be leaked from somewhere else. Maybe start from simple: replace the red cap.

The only things that can leak on the outer hub are the aluminum hub itself, the gasket behind the hub, the clear plastic being cracked, the gasket behind the plastic cap and the red plug. If you buy the replacement hub it comes with a gasket and fixes any of the other possibilities.

When you say by the replacement hub, do you mean the replacement hub cap like this
https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/81-2kcb9A2L._AC_SL1500_.jpg

On the above picture, there is a number 28. On my hub cap, there is a number 8, what does that mean?

how do I cross reference to current hub cap model?

You can take the hub to a truck supply place to get the exact hub or get the new style from Amazon as long the bolt pattern matches which I have never found more than one pattern on all my trucks but I haven't checked my spares at home with the coach and until I get back home can't verify it, but Amazon has no problem with returns.

Looks like you could stand a grease job on those fittings while your at it.

Before you install new oil bath hub covers I would refill, may take a couple fills with some time in between to bring up to level mark. Like oldguy said your leak will show up with short trip. Seems to me your rotors or at least your outer edges of rotors would show some rust if the seals are good. How long has the coach been sitting? By the looks of the outer rim and the rust streaking from lugs its been some time. Is there any visible oil through the site glass? Just mentioning this because no sense installing new hub covers just to be removing them to do seals. If doing seals I would suggest filling hub galley and topping off with a synthetic semi fluid/pourable grease, do it and forget it.
