My nimbus has an exaust leak at cyl 4 probably gasget. Foretravel would not work on it. Said take it to Cummins.
I was at Foretravel changing a cabinet when I discovered the leak.
Talked to MOT they said Stewart&Stevenson had worked on them in the past.
Cummins Houston is having problems and S&S is in Longview closer to foretravel. They said they would do the job.
That is where the coach is now.
I am home in Waller near Houston.
I looked at removing the the engine hatch. It extends under the bed frame looks like it needs to be dissembled to get access to the top of the engine. The bed is on a slide. Any one have experience in that situation. Looks like a tougher job than the Manafold.
Any one have experience with the engine hatch under bedroom slide.
The manifold is likely warped and will need to be replaced or out to the machine shop for resurfacing. I'm a pretty good size guy and if I had to I could get to everything thru the back.
They have changed a few at Stewart& Stevenson. No cracked ones yet. One did not need anything except gasget. Others made the trip to the machine shop.
They can get gaskets and bolts in two days. 4 to 5 days for Manafold. Going to remove Manafold and check things out and only order Manafold if it needs replacing.
I did not want to drive it home with the leak if I did not have to or I might have done it myself. Looks like a gasget to me.
I am surprised Foretravel would not do the work. 😱
The Longview S&S is very familiar with Foretravels and will not be freaked by engine access issues. They fixed my retarder problem. They are much more likely to be experienced with working on your engine than Foretravel. Sometimes it's the better part of valor to say no politely than an unwise yes.
They have another foretravel on their lot. Looks like it may have been there for a while.
I am back home on the farm in Waller Tx with my repaired Foretravel.
Stewart and Stevenson did a great job on the repair.
They found the exhaust manafold was fine just needed new gasget and bolts. They found the parts and made the repair. I told them I thought the Cummins was under powered. They agreed and it still was.
Further examination found a split Charge Air cooler. Finding parts was difficult in today's environment.
Foretravel had one but it was very expensive. I called Foretravel and they had some. Motorcade number saved a lot of money. Foretravel is swamped and could not do the work anytime soon. I had it shipped to SS Longview and just got back to Waller.
The result was amazing. The coach climbs hills as fast as my pickup. A different Beast.
Expensive repair but worth it. Now planning a trip to Colorado for some cool weather in the mountains.
The cooler was $3200 with my motorcade discount. 🤯Almost half What was quoted to S&S.
Glad you are going. I had one re-cord at a rad shop for my Monaco so that is always an
option if you can't find one.
Congratulations. You've restored power to your engine, taken care of an important maintenance item, and found a competent repair shop that doesn't just throw parts at problems. You will really notice the difference in Colorado and New Mexico. We will be in New Mexico and Colorado starting in two weeks and then leaving in mid July for Oregon. Safe and joyful travels.
Have had several inquiries about travel in the Angel Fire/Eagle Nest NM areas due to fire.
Both are clear of the fire areas.
