Title: Air throttle installation to replace King Controls
Post by: Dan & Annie on June 17, 2022, 12:14:35 pm
Replacing the King Controls throttle in our '98 U295 with an air throttle, using jor's excellent writeup (https://www.foreforums.com/index.php?action=media;sa=media;in=4916) as our guide. He tapped into the air system under the coach with a 1/2" x 1/2" x 3/8" brass tee (see pic) which I cannot find anywhere online or at a local shop. Does anyone have a part # and/or know where I can find this?

That would be an air brake fitting and a hydraulic hose an fitting store should have one.

Try the Parker online catalog.  They carry those fittings.

Just looked at Parker - I don't see it there.

The part I'm looking for assumes I would be tapping into a 1/2" air line to supply the new air throttle. I'm not sure now which line I should be using. See attached diagram. Where would anyone suggest, and what have others done when they upgraded to the air throttle?

I found one:

98786 Composite DOT Approved Union Tee, Push-To-Connect Air Brake Fitting,... (https://www.imperialsupplies.com/item/0987860)

Chuck you're good. Thanks. Wish I didn't have to buy 5 at a time.

Isn't the tee reversed for what you need?

If I'm tapping into an existing 1/2" line, then I'd want 1/2" on the two ends and 3/8 in the middle of the tee.

This looks to be exactly what I need. Thanks Charles.

Good work finding the "T" union.  That one never showed up in my casual Google search.  Proves that Google doesn't know everything about everything!

I'm still looking for advice on where to tap into the existing air system. The instructions I'm looking at say to cut the front tank's 1/2" air line, reconnect it with the 1/2" openings on the T, then connect the Supply line to the 3/8" opening on the T. It is not clear to me what line he is referring to. The more I study the diagram the more I think I want to tap into a 3/8" line somewhere downstream of the pressure protection valve, so any catastrophic failure of my installation would not suddenly bleed the air out of the braking system. Thoughts?

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but there are two front tanks; the braking system is spit into two circuits similar to the system on your automobile, if one fails you have something left with which to work.

Making progress with the air throttle install. Air lines are run and hooked up, with pressure regulator and ball valve shutoff in place. Treadle valve pedal installed and operating, providing variable air pressure to end of hose under the bed. Now just waiting for throttle control cylinder and throttle position sensor to arrive.
