Title: axle torque specs
Post by: ScottW on August 22, 2022, 07:52:03 pm
Hi all,
We had to have our 1998 U270 towed after having a hydraulic hose rupture. The tow truck driver knew to remove both axles and all went well. I've successfully replaced the hydraulic hoses. The coach runs great...so far, don't want to jinx us. I have replaced the axles but can not find the axle torque specs anywhere. I'm hoping someone out there is the Foretravel community has this info. Any help on this subject would be much appreciated.

Bolt Depot - Nuts and Bolts, Screws and Fasteners online (http://www.boltdepot.com)
Scott you can google this or just bolt torque specifications and you will get a chart that gives size and bolt grade and the amount of torque. I would bet that it will either be a grade 5 or grade 8, if they used a grade 2 I would be surprised
5/16 grade five coarse thread is 13 foot lbs and a fine thread is 14 ft lbs
3/8 grade 5  coarse thread is 23 ft. lb and fine thread is 26 ft. lbs

This is from the overhaul manual, dont know if it it our model but should be simular
https://www.centralstatesbus.com/wp-content/uploads/2010Manuals/VisionP/RearAxleDifferential.pdf
5/8 is 150-230 ftlbs
3/4 is 310-400 ft lbs
Definitely worth double checking

David mentioned this thread to me yesterday. The meritor manual for the 10 bolt pattern that holds the axle in is 100 ft lb. I remember when I removed the bolts that they were fairly easy to remove and I was kind of surprised at that. But that was the specs on the manual.
