My starter is quit working. Got on the bench and put jumpers to it and it is using juice holding it
in one place. The starter was fairly easy to remove and it is a lot smaller than the one on the 8.3
that I removed years ago. The part # is 3103913 and crosses to a 8300017 Delco Remy. I will go to
a place near here that I have used before.
Perhaps it's a geared starter. They are frequently smaller and lighter than non-geared starters.
Pierce
Having just gone through this, I had to buy a 2 foot , 4 / 0 cable to run from the block ground to the front of the starter. In case your ground won't reach to the front. Others have done this too.
Pierce I think you may be right and Jason there is 4 ground wires on the starter and one comes
straight from the battery. I had just installed new batteries as I thought my old batteries were
toast as the engine wouldn't start unless I had the boost on but maybe the starter was drawing
too many amps. I will find out more tomorrow when I go to the Western Starter.

Post 17 has picture of both. 28 pounds lighter
Take your old starter with you also count the pinion teeth. Mine was a different starter with less pinion teeth, Luckily I had a parts lady that had run into this before. Jim.
Thanks Scott, from your pictures I know that I have a reduction starter. I have 2 ground cables on
the batteries and I will add another positive cable straight to the starter as my positive cable gets
warm when starting.
The new starter is back in and the engine turns over like it should. The place I go to
is a starter and a alternator rebuild shop so they know their stuff. It's a family run business
and none of the kids want to take over. I will hate it when they retire. The starter I got is new.
They open at 7:30 in the morning so I was back home by 8:30
Sad to see the old mom & pop places going away.
I agree! Can't find a shop here in San Diego that will repair an alternator.
Yesterday I just turned the engine over and I didn't want it to start and today I needed to move the
coach and the rate the engine turned over was beyond my expectations.
