Which starter do I use for my 98 U320 with the M11. Is it the 8200308 or the 8200433? I have seen both listed for use in M11 engines
My 2003 used the 8200308. Here's the differences:
Part Number: 8200433
Pinion Teeth: 12
Pinion Pitch: 8/10
Part Number: 8200308
Pinion Teeth: 11
Pinion Pitch: 6/8
My guess is I will have to contact Cummins as I have no idea about the differences...
If your starter is off count the teeth and follow Keith's chart and you know. I just took my old
starter in to get it rebuilt and walked out with a new starter so I didn't have to look up anything.
As it takes a bit longer to get starters here, I am going to wait until I am not going anywhere to take it off and do the waiting game for the new one
ISM starter (https://www.foreforums.com/index.php?topic=43955.0) Delco 8200308
Even with all the supply chain problems, I would think that whichever one you decide to get, there should be many on the shelf in Edmonton. These are very common starters.
I love the gear reduction starter - Delco 8200308 - in my 2000 u320. The M11 starts so much better with it.

I used 8200433 . I was able to look at mine while it was on the engine to get the part number then searched at the link above. I referenced Scott's writ up he posted as well, that was helpful. Few things- 1) like Scott, I did have to get a small extension cable for the positive Amazon.com: 4/0 AWG Gauge Red + Black Pure Copper Battery Inverter Cables... (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01F44YNIG/and) 2) I had to enlarge the new cable connector with a drill bit so it would fit the post of the starter and 3) I had a spacer that I had to reuse see this Remy Delco Starter Install Wiring question (https://www.foreforums.com/index.php?topic=45007.msg456999#msg456999)
The end result is quite noticeable, you'll be pleased.
