Title: Location of VIM box
Post by: Krisu320 on March 08, 2023, 05:19:10 pm
I'm trying to find my VIM on my 1996 U320. I've looked high and low but I'm missing it somewhere. Does anyone know where this may be located?

Are you asking about the VIN - Vehicle Identification number, or something different?

If it IS the VIN that you seek, look for a metal plate affixed to the wall next to driver seat.  Also see link below:

If you are talking about the VIN and are in some parts of the country they may want to see the one stamped on the frame rather than the sticker on the wall.  To find this hidden stamped number on your age coach you most likely will need a wire brush, a water hose, scraper.
Raise coach and block.
Turn steering wheel to the right,
Turn off engine as this may take a while.
On the frame rail just above the front axle on the left side of the coach there will be the factory stamped number.
The water hose wire brush and scraper is to remove the yuck that has built up hiding the number on that frame rail.

Or are you looking for a VIM box similar to what is used on a plasma cutter and interface to a CNC machine.

Not the VIN. The VIM is the Vehicle Interface Module. Usually runs between the ECU and transmission. Has 2 fuses in it. It's a black box that has bolts going around the lid. Should say Allison on it.

Well, that's very different.

The VIM will look something like the photo below.  Any members with mid to late 90's U320 ever seen one on their coach?  If so, step forward.

Ours is hid in the console on the left side of the drivers seat. It is under the shift panel and hard to see and even harder to get to.. I have seen some mounted in the basement on the ceiling up behind the inverter/converter and HWH compressor.

VIM = (Allison) Vehicle Interface Module and is not the same as the Allison computer ECU. VIM may contain fuses and relays and be located in various locations.

Mine is located next to the HWH computer in the same Bay as the aqua Hot. Didn't know what it was but the picture is worth a thousand words.
