Title: AC fan run capacitor
Post by: Realmccoy on May 18, 2023, 10:03:48 pm
Coach has original Dometic DuoTherms (1998). Rear air has been noisy and stopped running today. Pulled the capacitors and the start capacitor tested good 47mu but fan run capacitor at first tested 9.9 on one side and zero on the other.  It is a dual 20+10uf 370vac CsC brand. Now I tested it again and 0 0 on both legs. A quick internet search found this at two rv supply houses for $70 to $85. A Jard is $18 on EBAY. Can this be purchased at an HVAC supply house ? I'm going into McKinney TX tomorrow. Couple HVAC supply houses in town.

The start capacitor looks newer, should both be replaced? Thanks. This is not in my normal line of work. A little jumpy as I removed them. Never messed with them before.

I can't help with the capacitor but on mine when they were noisy I found the mounts were worn out
and I replaced the ones that were worn out and now it is quiet.

A/C supply houses stock them. Make sure the squirrel cage spins. The bearings go out on the fan motors and makes them noisy.

Patric, I have replaced the capacitors in both my 24 year old A/C's as well as home A/C's a couple of times. I would purchase them at a local HVAC shop and would suggest that you replace both start and run capacitors as long as you are up on the roof and have the cover off.

If you can't find the duel capacitor there is room in there to have 2 single capacitors. If you have to go this route you will need to make up a longer jumper wire, the HVAC store will show you which leads will need to be jumped so you have essentially a duel capacitor.

What Mike said.  Also check that PTCR and smell it.  If it smells burnt at all then replace it.  Don't get cheap chinese capacitors, MARS or made in USA are normally excellent.

My noisy unit was one of the Freon lines bumping against the housing do to a bad clamp. Would have worn thru for sure eventually. Amazing how much noise it was making. With the unit running and the cover off put your hands on all the lines, be careful as they can be hot enough to burn unprotected skin.

Found a Jard 20+10 uf dual capacitor on Amazon from North American HVAC. Installed and AC now working. Certainly helped to photograph the wiring and label wires prior to removal. Thanks for all the help. Cost was $16.00. Ordered a spare as this particular capacitor is mostly used on these older Coleman ACs and not generally available except for $70 to $85 from a couple RV suppliers. About one week to get one from anywhere.

Your coach should have had Dometic air conditioners from the factory. If it has Coleman some one must have changed them.

I stand corrected. It's a Dometic Penguin Duo-Therm. The AC capacitor comes up in searches as Coleman RV AC.
