Title: 7 yr old Michelins
Post by: Lt403 on June 01, 2023, 12:26:41 pm
Just wanted to post these pics from my right front tire that caught my eye.
No cracking on side walls.

This tire was on the drivers side when we got the coach and shortly after was switched to passenger side when we got an alignment.

Alignment issue?

Or, could the outside rib be contacting something in full-lock turns?

Not that I know of .
Wheels are turned now and nothing is touching.
When they straighten the tires I'll see.
They are original size tires.
Last alignment was about 3 1/2 years ago.
I just installed the steering box and new drag link ends.

It's called river, I would put the tire on the rear axle and bring the rear tire forward to replace. I've never had a tire or front end person be definite concerning the cause. They run thru the list of "possibilities" but never a definite cause. It will get worse in that position but wont on the rear as it is almost always a steer tire that does it. I've not helped you but putting the tire on the drive axle will stop it from progressing and the tire should last until your ready for a new set. Keep an eye on the replacement and as always a close check on pressures. I've had many do the same on class 8 steer position.

Could it be hitting an air bag. On my coach coach they would hit the air bag about half way between
straight and full turn.

That's not caused by hitting or rubbing anything.I graze the airbag base with 295 tires, doesn't cause an issue. Probably had 20 or more steer tires river in my career on class 8 trucks, of course that's many trucks and many steer tires.

Don't swap rotation on Michelin. It aggregates blow out and tread separation.
Always spin them the same direction.

Thanks everyone,

Dub thanks for the info .

Peter these are 275/80 tires and are not rubbing.

Mike when we first got the coach and had the alignment is when they swapped front tires for wear.
I have read that even directional tires can run the other way after their half life but don't remember if that was Michelins.
I'm sure you speak from experience.

Thanks again

Michelin recommends moving the coach so the tire turns 1/4 turn every four months. Put some miles on it a couple of times a year. We have a Michelin for a spare with the directional arrow even though the tread looks the same either way. We had a set of Coopers on the coach that cracked really badly with one crack so deep, I put the spare on the anti arrow side while we were heading to the tire dealer in Sacramento for a new set of 295s. Michelin also recommends dropping the pressure by half on spares and if the coach is on stands. Installing new tires, fill the tire to 22 psi then check both sides for bulges, etc.

Hi Pierce, one thing I can say is that our coach does not sit for more than 2 months max and when we get to the coach we drive about 60 miles and stay in it a 3-5 days to run all the systems.
