Title: 50 amp replacement plug
Post by: Peter on June 04, 2023, 04:18:55 pm
I am replacing the 50 amp shore plug. I am just confirming that I just have to shut the salesman switch off only, prior to replacing the plug. I am currently not plugged into shore power

The salesman switch only shuts off 12 volt. The plug will be dead as male plugs would not
be safe as they aren't insulated.

No need to shut off anything as power goes one way. If you want to be extra cautious, flip the 50 amp breaker under the bed.

If you haven't got a plug yet, check out the Smart Plug brand,a much better plug.

Too weird. Would be fine for a plug to coach connection but is different in style if you plan to put on the end of your cord. Stay with the standard plug configuration in all locations. You wont regret in the long run.

Not sure what you mean by "too weird",yes he has to buy a recepticle and a plug, the coach only has one input plug so not sure what you mean by other connections, bottom line is it makes a better electrical connection, whatever makes you happy.

I personally don't get the "too weird" comment either.  The Smart Plug looks like it is a far superior design especially in terms of safety.  But if using public locations you still have to deal with the old 4 prong plugs anyway which negates many of the benefits.

But whichever way you go if dealing with the old standard outlets the plugs with the handles as shown above would be my choice.

Too weird.  Can't go to a local hardware store to replace plug or socket that was damaged on a Sunday afternoon Holiday weekend. Yes it's real trick, but too fancy for a primary power cord. Every additional connection is a potential for a failure. Why would you spend a bunch of money on something you will just admire and not use. Are you planning on disconnecting your coach at that plug. Being water proof is nice but does it need to be inside your compartment. If you're that concerned just unplug it when you're in there cleaning with the hose? KISS. Staying standardized makes more sense to me. Now if it never leaves your driveway, heck ya get the non standard plug and socket. That will work great.

Let's try for the last time,Peter wants to replace the plug that is between the power cord and the coach(the plug that plugs into the coach),he will reuse the cord and the plug that plugs into the power recepticle that supplys power,he will have to buy the plug,
I suggested he check out the smart plugs,he will have to buy the coach end recepticle and the cord end plug,if you read on the smart plug site you would understand you do not change the end that plugs into power, real simple, have no earthly idea what
KISS means.

Keep it simple, stupid (KISS) is a design principle which states that designs and/or systems should be as simple as possible. Wherever possible, complexity should be avoided in a system—as simplicity guarantees the greatest levels of user acceptance and interaction. KISS is used in a variety of disciplines, such as interface design, product design, and software development.

The term was first used in the US Navy and is thought to have been coined by Kelly Johnson, who was the lead engineer at the Lockheed Skunk Works. Johnson told the designers at Lockheed that their designs should be simple enough to be repaired by a man in a combat situation with only some basic mechanic's training and simple tools. If their products weren't simple and easy to understand, they would not only cost lives but also quickly become obsolete in combat conditions and thus worthless. In the world of user experience design and related disciplines, the KISS principle borrows from such a scenario in that users who tend to lead busy lives will quickly abandon a complex design.

Shore plug
I have used these with good results and outstanding service life. Unplug cord to install. I would power down coach for ac power, no generator

They are quite robust and fit the standard 50 amp outlets at campgrounds and parks.

X2 on what dsd just posted. The handle makes it easy to pull off the pedestal.

Are you sure that is what he is wanting to replace, and not the plug that plugs into the pedestal?

sorry i must have opened up a bees nest...
I only want to replace the plug end of the 50 amp cable coming from my reel.
The Camco solution seems to be the best one.
I really just wanted to know if I had to do any radical things power wise before I attempted to replace the plug end.
Apologies for the confusion.

My bad,got it backwards, plus did not know you had a reel,I myself don't like using abbreviations and/or acronyms on the forum because many of them have too many meanings and can be taken differently by different people,KISS is a perfect example,
don't think it was the case but I could have taken it that I was being called stupid.
