Title: Toyo M177
Post by: "Irish" on June 23, 2023, 04:43:35 pm
Our 7 year Michelins looked like new with about 25,000 on them. The previous owner put them on in 2018 and did not order "fresh" dates on the tires so  they are now prematurely out of date.
Having searched the forum regarding new tires we decided to go with Toyo and go up a size to 295/75R22, still load range H.
The Michelins are an old low profile tire size not used on new trucks and have a limited resale value unlike the larger 95's. The Toyo P170 has been used by some on the forum without a problem and we're about $300 cheaper for 6 than the P177's.
The 170's are not your best choice since they are designed for delivery truck driving, where the 177's are for OTR trucks doing a lot of highway driving. They are designed to be less prone to aquaplaning and have slightly less tread depth which makes the steering less likely to wander.
We have had a history of steering wander since buying the coach which was annoying, despite having had a full alignment, new tie rod and drag link ends and a new / rebuilt steering box.
So with new tires on, we headed out this afternoon and drove just shy of 100 miles, minimal wander with much improved steering. No evidence of the larger tires rubbing on the airbags or frame,
6 tires, mounted, balanced and installed  with FET and Tax totaled $3514 less old tire trade in of $428, made a purchase price of $3050.
This was not half the price of new michelin but close!
It it worth selling older tires, the more popular 95' 6 years old would be close to $200 a piece for a $1200 trade in, and the cost of these Toyos kept for 6 years comes out to $500 a year. It's worth bartending when the tires are not too old.

The going up to 295 75R 22.5 in size is 0.1 inch in diameter and 10 mm in width.  Now, if you purchase 295 80R 22.5, you have truly gone up in size.  Make sure it is 295 75R 22.5

I like my toyos and replace them with new toyos last year in Oklahoma City. Unfortunately I couldn't get the higher rated load tire. Back ordered. The one thing I don't like about toyos is that tire gives very little traction on mud as I found out. But on the highway they work great.

I don't think any highway tire gives any good traction in mud.

I keep seeing posts where owners get new tires but get a partial refund on the old ones.  What happens to the old tires?  In getting quotes in my area, there was no credit for old tires since they are no longer considered safe (reason we changed them out).  Are truckers putting old (unsafe) tires on rigs that carry much greater loads?

When I got my best price for the tires installed on the coach I asked if they knew anyone that might buy them, then I asked how much they would give me for them if they had someone who would be interested ?
Yes the tire size is slightly off but perfect for a dump truck or a high yearly milage truck , they said yes we will buy them from you for $100 per tire and we will sell them for $350 installed . Deal done, no disposal fee and reduced sales tax!

I doubt a tire dealer would be selling our tires if they thought they were not safe. I think mostly would be sold to a trucker that's going to use them on a tandem axle trailer. Greater loads no not so much, maybe a yard trailer or a trailer that never sees highway speeds or heavy loads. Lots of different applications for these tires that could be used safely.

The person that bought my used tires said he buys them every time they become available and uses them on the "Lift Axles" of this trailers and  dump trucks. This axle is controlled by an airbag and used to distribute the load weight so the truck can scale more.  ^.^d
