Title: Light control relay problem [split from Obsolete Intellitec Module]
Post by: Journey, Roam, Explore on September 08, 2023, 06:41:35 pm
I've been having increasing problems with one of my light controllers that's located above the microwave. I haven't pulled it yet to see what kind it is but it's probably the same. When I turn on the under counter lights in what I call a coffee bar across from the galley the overhead lights flicker, same with the under the storage in the head. It's very annoying and you can hear the unit clicking on an off as the relays click the lights flicker on and off. Sometimes it doesn't do it but it's been increasing. I don't think it likes the LED lighting.
If you find out anything please post on the thread.

Bob, do you have a pic. of what controller you are talking about? I only have a cupboard above the microwave and haven't found any light controllers on my coach. I do have relays.

Look under your refrigerator.

Can you describe the problem you are having?  Some buttons on our keypads had stopped working or controlled the wrong light and I was able to reprogram the keypads and it has worked fine for over 2 years.

The refrigerator goes to the floor. If I had a picture of it I could look where it might have been moved to. Still don't understand its purpose.

Where are the keypads? All my lights work with switches.

[I moved these posts into their own topic - they appear to be related to the relay module in many coaches and not the more complex Intellitec Lighting Control that uses chicklet-style button pads instead of rocker switches - Michelle]

Thanks Michelle, I must not have the Intellitec control. I was  wondering what members were talking about.

I don't know what kind of controller but I guess it's a relay. Couple years ago I switched out all the lights for LED and everything worked pretty well for a while. The under top storage cabinets were already LED and we're doing fine. But the problem started after I changed out the fluorescent lighting in the middle of the ceiling down the coach for led strips. A while after I installed them I noticed that they were flickering once in a while. But it's soon went away. A little later it started doing it more and more when you first turn the lights on and it seems to be the ones underneath the storage compartment next to the pantry I call it my coffee bar. And also the lights in the bathroom. They flicker like crazy and then the main overhead light will turn on sometimes several of them and it seems to be also connected with the water pump switch because if I have only that coffee bar light on after it's settled down and I turn off the water pump switch in the kitchen, then the overhead light comes on again and you can hear some clicking from the cabinet above the microwave.
Paul Smith a previous owner replaced the original refrigerator with a marine style refrigerator and a separate bd50 compressor. There's nothing under the refrigerator now. It may have been relocated to above and it's behind some foam insulation that they put in when they redid the refrigerator. It's very annoying but usually I don't use those lights very much so it doesn't matter too much except for when I do use them and then I remember that I've been putting off looking into it for a while.
I got a feeling it's above the refrigerator in the wall between the microwave and the refrigerator.
That might require me taking the refrigerator all the way out and I don't want to do that if I don't have to.

Chuck,

Those ntellitec lighting modules were introduced 1st in the 42" coaches when they started production in '97/98. It's brain was hid under the fridge which makes it a PITA to install a residential fridge. These systems were later added to the 40' coaches around the same time as they added slides.

If it is anything like putting led lights in the turn signals, the original flashers were designed for a certain amperage and different electronic flashers are needed when you finally change all the bulbs. The controller is probably not seeing enough amps to function properly. Maybe try putting some incandescent and fluorescent bulbs in as a trouble shooting suggestion.

JRE,

You should have lighting relays hid in the false floor in the cabinet above the micro. (at least that is where some are hid)  Depending on the lay out of the bathroom in relation to the kitchen you may have the relays hid behind a trap door in the medicine cabinet. There should be one for the hall light should be hid under the TV in the bedroom or under the bottom drawer if you have drawers under the TV in the bed room.

I found it as I suspected it was up above the microwave behind the panel that holds the outlet for the microwave. Usually the clicking is very soft but for some reason when those two low draw lights are on it doesn't like it. I'm not quite sure why it's even using that rather than just straight wiring from the switch to the light. It's only 12 volts it's not high draw.
The problem is is it the switching system that is bad or maybe just the LED lighting that it doesn't like?
Thanks Mike I have seen the one that was in the bedroom. I did not aware of one in the bath

From looking at different things online it seems like this is a low side switching relay for the water pump but then they use it to switch other things as well which is why when I turn the water pump on or off the lights go on and off. So I guess it is a bad switch relay in this thing and it doesn't look like it's made anymore so I needed to call foretravel on Monday anyway I'll just add it to the list. Hopefully there is one that supersedes it.

You might check out this one to see if it will work. Just call the manufacturer Monday. Visone also has the original ones.

Well I found one of my problems was I had removed the light from one of the under cabinet fixtures in the bathroom. I forgot about that and it seems like that is causing part of my problem. I replaced it with one of the old LED lights the previous owner had used. One of the LEDs was burned down on it so I have to get a new one but it's not doing it as much with the bathroom light now. Still have the issue with the coffee bar lighting. I think it is a voltage draw issue because if I turn on other lights the flickering tends to die down and after a while go away.

From looking at different things online it seems like this is a low side switching relay for the water pump but then they use it to switch other things as well which is why when I turn the water pump on or off the lights go on and off.

Normally there are separate relays for the ceiling lights and the water pump.  The same relay shouldn't operate both.

FT uses these relays when there are 2 or more switches controlling the same thing - so ceiling lights (that were originally fluorescent fixtures, not the round/puck lights) typically have a switch in both the kitchen and bathroom - that's one relay.  Water pump if it has 2 or more switches (kitchen, bathroom, sometimes utility bay) has a separate relay.

Water pump causing lights to act weird could be noise/backfeed on the line.  Poor connections can cause electricity to flow in unusual paths (it'll use the path of least impedance to get back to its source), so check that everything is clean and tight.
