Title: Roof Sealants
Post by: Lon and Cheryl on September 15, 2023, 12:38:09 am
Before Winter comes I would like to re-seal the front and rear caps, Bathroom sky light, and some of the other things pocking out of my roof.

I see Eternabond tape, Dicor self leveling sealant, and silicone self leveling sealant. I have read that the silicone self leveling sealant will last years longer than the regular self leveling sealants. I know nothing else will stick to the silicone so I'm cautious about its use, but this is the roof and that problem may not be a big deal. I like the idea of the Eternabond but have no experience with it.

What have you found to be an, effective roof sealant, one that will work for at least several years.

Good old Dicor on things you may want to remove. 3M 5200 on things you don't intend to remove( it doesn't like to let go) . I'm not a big fan of silicone for roof sealing applications

I have used 3M 4000UV for several years in various locations. It seals well and can be removed when necessary.

I keep a roll of Eternabond tape in my supplies on the coach. I consider it more of an on the road repair that is permanent. I had an issue earlier this year with water leaking from the skylight over the shower and needed a quick fix. I covered the screws and the seam with the width of the tape and solved the problem. It might be a problem getting it off to access the screws if needed in the future. On another note the same week my brother and his wife hit a rock in their kayak and tore a hole in it. I put a strip of the Eternabond over it and they paddled the rest of the trip without any sign of the tape coming off. I used Dicor to seal over the 3M tape holding my solar panels and 4000 on other items on the roof.

I've had good success removing eternabond tape with a heat gun set on decal removal, you have to do it twice, once for the fabric then again for the residual glue.
Then a final clean with acetone on a rag.
