Title: ABS
Post by: DaBus on October 25, 2023, 02:38:11 pm
Hey all!  Our 2003 U320 is new to us.  The ABS light is on most of the time.  Have read all the previous posts I can search .  There is supposed to be a switch under the dash to initiate the blink codes.  I can not for the life of me find any such switch even remotely like the picture in the All things Foretravel ABS treatise.  On key-on I get 3 clicks then 2 more a little faster but no more.  The clicks seem to be coming behind the toe kick plate in front of the accelerator.  Have not wanted to take it apart yet.  Is there a treatise on exactly where and how to find/adjust the sensors on the tires?

Thanks

Jerre

The clicks are typically a check of each wheel sensor - can you tell if there's a pause like one is missing/not reporting or if it's at the beginning or end of the sequence?  Hopefully if it is a sensor, it's one of the tag ones which are the easiest to get to.

On a 2003, there should be 2 switches next to each other in the cowl area, IIRC.  The WABCO controller is located in the driver's side storage bay near the slide bladder manifolds - that might produce the under-foot sensation you're getting when the clicks occur.

Thanks Michelle,  I'll check that out.  By the cowl area do you mean the long cover behind the instrument cluster or under the dash by the steering column( I couldn't find any under the dash driver side)?  By the way all the tires were replaced by Herman Power when we bought the coach in September.

long cover behind the instrument cluster Top of dash, not under.

When we had ABS issues it was a sensor that became unplugged under the coach near the back of the wheel.  (I did not see this myself, a tech found it, plugged it back in, and wrapped it so it will not come undone again).

Thanks Dan, I popped the cover off and took a cursory look and didn't spot any obvious switches but will look further.  Only getting 4 clicks of 8 when key is on.  Not in a row.  Sounds like maybe one front tire, 3 drives are not pinging?  Betting on sensor problems from tire change.  Now just have to find sensors to check wire plugs.

Disabled and removed our ABS after I cooked the second sensor.  Found out the parts were also unobtainium.
Added the trans joystick so no more cooking the brakes and sensors and stuff hopefully.

Since my blowout in 2021, where the front right ABS wire was yanked out of whatever connector it is supposed to be plugged into, I've had an ABS light.  I never could find where that cable was supposed to be connected.  Black electrical tape over the ABS light cured the issue for me so far. LOL

Well, I was just about to give up.  I hate to give up.  I felt around the entire periphery of the dash opening and finally found the switches just under the windshield in the far left corner.  At least 5 inches from the border of the trim.  Impossible to see unless you could put your head in the opening.  I snapped a pic with my camera.  The result?  Blink code showed left tag wheel? has open circuit.
4 blinks and 6 blinks(keeps repeating until key off).  Still do not get the correct clicks on key-on though.  Any help for what I am looking for at the tag?  Wire connector/plug?  What might it look like.  Raining today or I would snap a pic of the axle side of the tag.

Ah - tags are the easiest.  I'll see if I can find a photo of when Steve replaced ours.

On our 03 with a tag, the notches on the tone wheel were filled with gunk. Sometimes it worked and sometimes it didn't. I jacked up the left rear tag axle and cleaned out the notches several years ago and so far no abs light.
