Title: Fluttering gas burner
Post by: kstine98 on November 01, 2023, 12:15:53 pm
I went to use my gas burner and it started "fluttering" and would not stay lit. It worked perfectly last week. I have plenty of LP in the tank.

I checked the tank itself and it is not frosted or anything like that. The temperature did drop this week, and is between 30 and 40°. Any idea what could be causing this?

I would suspect the regulator

I would think it's the regulator. I'm sure someone can explain more, maybe how to properly adjust it.

The regulators have a shelf life so if you don't know the last time it was replaced I'd just go ahead and replace it. Cheap and easy to do.

Check to see if other LP appliances also "misbehave".

If so, replace the regulator near the tank.

BUT, if the stove is the only device doing that, be aware that many stoves have their own/separate regulator in addition to the one at the tank.

I don't think I have any more
LP appliances. Hot water is via Aqua Hot and fridge was converted to electric. Where would I look to see if there is a separate regulator for the stove top?

Kevin,

Find a parts breakdown for your particular make/model stove.

If there is a regulator, it should show.

OR call the stove manufacturer and ask if there is a separate regulator.

Another thing-- of the tank valve has recently been turned off and then back on, turn it back off an VERY SLOWLY open it.  Sometimes the excess flow device gives issues if the valve is opened quickly and there is an outrush of gas.

Lift up the cover and make sure the pipes to the burners are clipped in position and that there are no spider nests in the pipes or water in the burners  from "recently" washing them

From Google:
"If you need to adjust your RV propane regulator, remove the cap and notice the adjustment screw underneath. Turning this screw clockwise will increase the outlet pressure, in most cases, but the proper direction of the adjustment will also be marked on the regulator itself."

Without a manometer (easy to make one) I would not suggest trying to adjust gas pressure.

If the problem is not in the stove (regulator, debris, something misaligned) just replace the at tank regulator.  Particularly if the at tank regulator is over a decade old.

Irish for the win!  Works perfect again. Thanks for the help!  I had cleaned it and didn't realize the covers "clipped" in.

Just for clarity and to help others, there are 4 small metal posts on the burner, and 4 corresponding holes in the cover. Make sure they line up.
