I scheduled a visit to the Tampa Cummins Coach Care shop after watching a slow oil pan gasket weep get slowly greater over the years we've owned the coach.
First concern was availability but they had the gasket in stock for our 2000 ISC. They did caution that if the pan itself was damaged and needed replacement there were none countrywide in inventory and it would take a factory manufacturing request. Fortunately the pan was not damaged.
BUT...there's a bracket (the U-shaped member below the pan) that needs to be removed and, possibly a coolant hose that "might" need to be removed. Total estimate assuming 2 hours each to remove and replace the bracket and drain and replace coolant, (only actual shop time would be billed) including gasket, oil and filter change and a thorough steam cleaning of the entire engine (my request)...$2300. Guaranteed not to be more but hopefully less. Stay tuned.
BTW...what is the purpose of that U shaped bracket?
Randy, can you post a picture? It might be a PO installed drag shield. My coach doesn't have one.
Coach is in shop as we speak. I'll take a pic when I get it back but perhaps others will reply who have it.
$2300
You should of warned us that this post may be upsetting to some owners
Naw! Remember, We coach owners are super rich. $2,300 is just lunch money! :)) (sarcasm alert)
At 24 years old thats less the $100/yr. :o
Economic justification........ gets us every time.
The bracket is there to keep the frame from spreading, and to hold the trans cooler.
Thanks Bruce. Tech said he'd never seen anything like that bracket before.
I'll try and post a picture of the bracket tomorrow.
Final bill $1728.05 to remove bracket and coolant pipe in order to remove oil pan and replace gasket. Oil change (plus 2 extra gallon jugs for future), oil filter and steam clean entire engine. Parts were 180.39 and labor $1427.10 plus tax. I think labor rate was approx $215/hour.
Wow Randy! Better sell me that controller to make up for some of that.
Here are the pics...I guess I can see how much was involved in a "simple" oil pan gasket removal.
Yes, that "frame" is just there to protect the oil pan from grounding.
8 bolts to remove it as I recall. Maybe 15 minutes.
Randy ,now is the time to paint all that bare metal while it's still clean, get some rust bullet or por 15,if you can take the pica you can paint.
That's why it pays 2 hours each remove and install oil pan. :o
