Title: Toad Braking Systems -- Does This Look Familiar?
Post by: Dakota Slim on January 28, 2024, 05:27:43 pm
I bought a Honda CRV that had previously been towed. It has a Roadmaster baseplate but I am puzzled about what braking system it had. The only clues that I can see are the front connections in one photo and the 3 wires hanging from the dash in the 2nd photo.
I have towed this car for short distances without issue but need to add the missing pieces if I venture further from home. I have been in contact with kb0zke and we have ruled out Invisbrake. He thought it may have been a Brake Buddy.
Any thoughts? I'm pretty sure that whatever system it was sat on the floor between the driver's seat and the brake pedal and pushed the brake pedal.

The thing with a ring on it is the breakaway.

If there's no penetration of the firewall near the brake pedal at all, it's not an SMI Stay n' Play or AF1.

Wish I could recall what the installation looked like of our old US Gear Unified Tow Brake - it would have been a cylinder under the driver's seat but I don't recall the wiring since it was hidden under the trim.  US Gear is long gone, sadly.

ETA - I did find the installation instructions still on line - does any of the toad wiring look like it?  Unified Tow Brake Towed Vehicle Kit (TV-1000K) Operating and Installation... (http://www.usgear.cc/utb_install/utb_installtv.htm)

How long ago was the tow brake originally installed - any idea?

OK, further digging - the breakaway looks like the one for Roadmaster's Even Brake, which is similar to the Brake Buddy.

The wires coming down *might* be for a status light/brake monitor accessory.

Thank you Michelle. All I know is this was in/on the car when I bought it from a used car dealer and I procrastinated until I saw David's ad for his towbar and Invisibrake box. I was hoping that was all I needed but this car had something else installed. I'm going to stop in a Roadmaster service center near me and get their opinion.
