Title: Dometic Refrigerator [Questions about converting to residential]
Post by: chasmatt on March 06, 2024, 12:51:30 pm
We have a 2003 U320 and are thinking of replacing the refrigerator (NDR1492) with a residential unit. We don't boondock. Has anyone replaced their fridge? What model number did you use?

You might want to look through the Renovations board.  I haven't seen any recent remodels, but past ones for NDR1492 replacements were usually Samsung French door counter-depth units.  There are quite a few, with the work generally done by FOT or MOT.  Ours was done by FOT.

If you have Intellitec lighting controls below the fridge (an option in 2003), it's a much more involved remodel since those have to be relocated.

There's quit a few members that have done that conversion themselves and have posted their project.
Use the "search function at the top right of page to find them.

Most "counter depth" fridge's will work.  Mine's a Samsung 18HFENBSR...4 years full timing (50/50 off grid) now and never a second of regret.

I installed a Samsung RF18 in our U320 back in 2018 and we remain extremely pleased with it.

I converted ours to 12 volt with the kit from JCPENNEY Refrigeration, works great and no making it fit issues

I put in a 13 cubit ft. Frigidaire which works great and it is the perfect size for us and built an
8 inch pantry beside the fridge which now that we have it I couldn't see how we could be
without it.

I put in a Heier 15 cu ft counter depth residential fridge after seeing one in a friends toy hauler RV.  Love it.  The only downside in my opinion is not having the positive lock on the fridge and freezer doors.  If I was to do it over, I would find a unit that didn't have sliding freezer sections.  I prefer bottom freezer, but wish it was a hinged door.

This is the unit I bought, I paid $500 for a used, like new unit off of craigslist from someone moving out of an apartment.
