Title: 1984 fORETRAVEL- genset questions
Post by: quickmagic on May 06, 2024, 08:58:59 pm
Hello all, Thank you folks very much, I just recently  bought this unit from a young fella that inherited this from his grandfather.
I know some things on repair, but It would really help if I could just get any type of books that has some actual info on how to work on their unit.
But anyway for now I need to know what kind of a genset this has in it. This is a front mounted diesel engine. And to really confuse me, there is a tag on the generator that says ; type fuel- gasoline. Markings on it are: ONAN 6.5 rv genset.
 sER.# f833684041,  Model & Specs. 6.5NH-3  RV160041;  AC Volts 120/240, KVA 6.5, KW 6.5, PF1.0,  Amps 54/27,  HZ 60, RPM 180,
Bat 12,  AMB 40*c        and at the fAR bottom of the tag 80-1360 appears.
Because this vehicle is diesel, and I don't believe there is any gasoline on board at all, so it must run off either diesel fuel oe lpgas, and I am saying that because it has spark plugs in it.
So if anyone can shed a litle light on this, I would be very grateful.        Thank You!

The model of the Foretravel would help. Propane would be the only fuel a generator with a spark plug  used on a diesel coach.

That is a 6.5 Onan generator with the vapor lp conversion would be my guess. It would have a regulator at the tank in addition to the regulator that provides lp to the house part of the coach. There should be another regulator mounted to the front of the generator low. There is a small hose attached to the lower part of the regulator and extends through the bottom plate. Wasps plug that hose which is a vent for the regulator and then it will not be able to get any propane to the generator. That is how almost all of that vintage were set up. With that being said I have an 84 with a 6.5 Onan that is liquid withdrawal. I don't know if it runs because the propane is empty and the coach doesn't run, so can't get the tank filled.

I had a 1981 Foretravel Travco diesel pusher that had a 3208 Cat and 6.5 Onan gas generator. It had a diesel tank and a gas tank and you filled them up front. If that's what you have, make sure you get the right fuel in the right tank. (ask me how I know)
That was before they introduced the Grand Villa series.

Thank you for your answers. There is no gasoline tank on the Foretravel, so its gotta be propane powered, I guess I'll find out.

The Model is R-800.

What engine does the coach have? You should be able to find an Onan manual for that generator.

Onan Owner Manual appears pretty close to the OP description of 6.5NH specifications.

Full Manual found here: https://www.fmcmotorcoach.com/files/Manual/Manual_genset/Onan_opp_manual.pdf

In that year Foretravel installed gas Onan generators converted to propane. They gave you a 60 gallon propane tank. It is a standard internal combustion motor that runs on propane.

That manual is for a generator that was probably about 8 years before the one in the 84. It had a circuit board controller. The 84 had relay controller.
