Title: Dash Generator coolant gauge
Post by: Barry & Cindy on July 23, 2024, 09:57:31 pm
To add a way to know generator coolant temperatures

May be able to install water temp sensor top front of generator near thermostat housing if there is a blank plug that opens to coolant flowing to radiator.

This is a handy place to install a dash gen coolant temp gauge sender.  Some have purchased the same OEM temp sensor used on Cummins engine, then install sensor in blank plug at gen thermostat housing.  OEM sensor will guarantee matching OEM dash gauge.

Run a wire from new gen sensor to dash.  Use a new DPDT dash switch to disconnect engine temp sensor and disconnect ignition power, and then power OEM dash coolant gauge with power, and wire from new gen sensor.

Switch down:  Normal, power meter when ignition is on, read Cummins engine coolant temp.

Switch up:  Generator Temp, power meter from house or chassis battery, read generator coolant temp.

This switch wiring just saves adding a separate gen coolant temp dash gauge with matching sensor which could be powered with generator run voltage.

Separate, individual, gauges for me. I do not want be confused.

Just remember to flip the switch back to the main engine before driving! But I like the idea, I really wish there was some feedback from the generator for coolant temp and oil pressure, just to make sure it's ok.

I have a lot of experience with these gen sets and other small engines that can be highly stressed. While these engine rarely give trouble, I often wonder how things are really going. I'm planning on coolant temp, oil temp, and oil pressure gauges. As I'm familiar with VDO and Autometer I will probably use them. I am also thinking just put them on the generator enclosure so the mechanical versions could be used.
