Title: Overflow coolant canister replacement
Post by: Realmccoy on August 10, 2024, 12:18:55 am
My plastic tank was leaking at the bottom and the mounting flange was breaking in a couple places. Did a forum search and found a link to MP Parts and a 5 quart container. It's the same width and general design of the original but seems to be a quart smaller. Re-used top mounting holes but had to drill two new lower holes. Labeled as Terex 10172 coolant overflow recovery tank.

The removal was facilitated on my 1998 Unicoach by removing right rear taillight to gain easier access to right side screws.

Shipping was prompt and well packed.

Never rule out FT parts department.  I had the exact same problem you describe and I did find all of the similar but smaller tanks.  Got the exact replacement from Foretravel for right around the same price as the others.  I was able to replace mine without removing the tail light which is a good thing since I can't figure out how to remove them... lol

Just looked through all my receipts and cant find the one for that. FT Parts knew what I needed and pulled it off the shelf. Nice to be able to see my levels again!

On my U240 Cat 3116, the same container has been cracked since I have owned it.(2007)  My little Cat engine temps vary from 182 deg to 201-202 deg on all trips(360 miles/day).  I have no coolant issues other than high temps on hills.  I do not add any coolant over time.  My engine coolant does not ever overflow from coolant tank(medal one).  So I have never replaced the plastic container.

Pat,

A good idea to replace/use the overflow reservoir. It will add a quart or so to what is in your cooling system (there will be no air pocket in the closed system) and it will keep air/oxygen out of the system.

If you do not see the level in the reservoir rise when warm and fall when cool, you have air in the cooling system. In that case, remove the pressure cap and top off and recheck reservoir level after a couple of cold/hot cycles.

That turned out to be a fraud website collecting credit card numbers. Had to get a new card as that account showed up on B of A's fraud alert. It was my post which I deleted.

Overflow container working like a charm. Nice to end that unsightly drip of coolant.
