Title: Fuel line concerns what years?
Post by: ratbug on August 18, 2024, 10:31:41 am
Which foretravel years are be concerned with premature fuel line deterioration, I know certainly my 2000 is in the that date range.  01-03 for example are problematic as well?

I've been following these reports for a few years and my impression is that it mostly affects coaches prior to 2002.  Mine has not yet shown any problems and I check regularly.

2001 replaced lines for air leaks into line. No signs of external leaks.

Ditto - following ever since the first few reports of coaches stalling and have never seen a 2002 or newer with cracked fuel lines.  Not to say someone didn't replace them as PM, but haven't seen any breakdown posts.

Pretty easy to tell.

Go to the primary fuel filter.  Look carefully at the fuel line where it has been expanded over the metal fitting on the IN side of the filter.  If small/fine cracks along the long axis of the hose-- they are bad.

Also, on any of the Cummins CAPS engines, the lift pump can get loose and leak fuel out and allow air in when the engine is running. Air in the fuel to the CAPS pump destroys them pretty quickly.

Don't think it's possible to generalize based on year model.  My '96 U295 with what appear to be Aeroquipt fuel lines has never shown any symptoms of air ingestion or leakage.  Start instantly after sitting for months, plus I have a Davcor primary filter which allows me to view the state of fuel, any air bubbles would be immediately apparent.
That said, had i a CAPS pump I would be hyper vigilant regarding air ingestion as Brett pointed out, and would strongly consider proactive replacement with polymer type lines .
