HELP,
I need help finding a Meritor RS15-120NFLF-36 third member with a 5.29 ratio. Mine is making loud noises on deceleration. I will take new or rebuilt.
Pat,
Don't you live down south around Lufkin if so you might call C & C truck parts in Kilgore 1-903-576-4462 (this is the last number I have for him) if anyone in the area has one or knows where one is located he will.
Are you sure that you have a bad 3rd member? If you have it apart why not just rebuild that one? You may just need a bearing or 2. Better yet have you pulled the U joint to make sure that the grease worms haven't ate up the trunnions in the U joint. Unless that pumkin has been run low/out of grease I would be looking at other things first.
Mike
Agree with Mike, 2 carrier bearings and 2 pinion bearings are all that is probably needed to make it as good as new. Axle bearings don't change sound with deceleration.
Thanks for the responses. Mike I do live in lufkin, TX and thanks for that phone number. I will call Monday morning. I have 227k miles on my U240. The rear end has always whined while running. This noise is different, it is a sound like a rock in a tire, except that it is louder and more solid medal sound. I here the sound on deceleration like coming into towns. The sound is running at the speed of the wheels, not the speed of the motor/drive shaft and continues down to a stop. I have had a mechanic ride and listen and he agrees with me that it is most likely a tooth on the ring gear. I don't know if this is any part of the cause, I was running 65-70 about 10 miles south of Lubbock, TX when the Allison shift pad starts to blink, after a few minutes of blinking, the tranny starts shifting up and down, I don't know all of what the tranny was doing, but ended up in forth gear with no lockup in the converter. The take off at red lights was very very very slow, but it would get up to 45-50 and we made it to S & S Lubbock, TX. That was 3:00pm on Friday, when I killed the engine, that was it no more tranny. The tech bench tested the TCM and found that it was shot. On the following Monday morning the new TCM came in and was installed, problem solved. It was after that I noticed the noise.
Update:
The TCU repair in Lubbock, TX was $2800.00 total.
The repair shop will only replace the complete third member, which I agree with. I found(after a lot of looking) a Weller rebuilt third member in Dallas,TX. I went to Dallas, picked up third member and carried it to repair shop. I bought 4 wheel bearing, 2 wheel seals, a set of break shoes, and brake hardware kits. After all that and the repairs done, the rear end does not have a sound. The rear end will wear and get louder with mileage. It is a standard truck rear axle used from '58 thru the late '70's in Ford F700 trucks. I am happy with it and I hope this one goes 227K miles also. Here is the break down:
1 RS15120529WEL third member 2959.81
Core deposit 1728.53
Sales tax 386.78
2 Brake Shoes(sets) 115.00 351.34 FOT
2 Wheel Seals 60.67 121.34 FOT
Sales tax 28.99
4 Wheel bearing cones 203.96 NAPA
4 Wheel bearing cups 145.96 NAPA
Sales tax 28.86
2 Brake hardware kit 33.02 Ewell Equipment
9 Hrs. labor, shop supplies, sales tax 1407.00
I am glad that all the repairs are finished. This means that I have a rebuilt rear axle including brake shoes. I have replaced the brake canisters about 1 year ago. I am happy about it.
Pat,
