Title: How to Crimp Ferrules (and Why You Need Them)
Post by: Dakota Slim on September 09, 2024, 12:27:51 am
I recently made a post about a ground wire that is required on the Victron Smart Solar charge controller that I am using to replace my old Renogy. One of the other differences is the size of the wire terminals. They seem to be much smaller on the Victron than they are on the Renogy.
It turns out that in Europe, ferrules are now required and my guess is it won't be long before they are required here. .
Live and learn... How to Crimp Ferrules (and Why You Need Them)
A wire ferrule is a simple way to finish off the end of stranded copper wire and prepare it to be used in a screw terminal like you'd find on a charge controller.
Crimping a wire ferrule onto a stranded wire can turn a ugly, high resistance messy wire end into a neat and tidy, low resistance professionally finished wire.

Here is a supplier that has these and the tools.
Note the ferrules with the plastic barrels and also the ones that can take 2 wires.
In industry these have been used for ages. The plastic barrels and shrink tube really add a finishing touch.

I've been shopping for ferrules and crimping tools and found that they both come in a wide variety of sizes, as do the heat shrink tubes.
